Factors that contribute to an effective workplace
Working environment
Location and working conditions
Working at a holiday resort makes people positive and they will have a positive attitude to
work. However, working in a call centre is worse because employees are office bound and
have to spend their day on the telephone. Companies should consider how this poor
environment could be improved so their employees will be motivated.
Hours of work
It can vary by person, but employees want their shifts to fit in with their lifestyles. The
overall number of working hours per week should not be over forty hours. Flexible working
is when staff work a set number of hours and they can decide when they work within
limitations. Fuel Hospitality in London offers flexible work and this motivates people to
work, because they will work when they want, so that they will have a positive attitude to
work.
Health and safety
In the workplace, legislations such as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 must be
adhered to. There are specific regulations where there are criminal hazards or food is
served, etc. A lapse in safety procedures can result in the collapse of the business or a
prosecution. Health and safety is important for both employees and customers. Companies
working with children especially must make health and safety a priority. Staff need to know
that it is safe for them to work at the organisation.
Equipment and resources
A nice environment and good equipment are important to motivate employees, such as
ensuring that the company has the latest IT equipment and comfortable areas to take
breaks. An example would be Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, who provide the
latest equipment and resources to their employees, so they will be motivated.
Social events
These are very useful for having a friendly atmosphere at workplace by getting to know each
other. It will build teams, so that employees will feel more comfortable to work in teams
when they know each other. Companies usually have social outings, such as a Christmas
party.
