meiose I levert bij de ouders elk twee dochtercellen
waarover de homologe chromosomen zich
willekeurig verdeeld hebben. Het aantal mogelijke
combinaties is 2n (n=haploïd aantal). Bij de mens
dus 223 oftewel 8 miljoen verschillende gameten dat
een individu kan produceren.




Crossing over: in de profase van meiose I kunnen stukjes DNA van de homologe
chromosomen uitwisselen (want dan liggen ze paarsgewijs dicht bij elkaar in het
equatoriale vlak) waardoor nieuwe samenstellingen van de
gameten kunnen ontstaan.
Willekeurig bevruchting: de gameten (eicel en zaadcel)
van de twee ouders kunnen willekeurig samensmelten tot
een diploïde zygote waardoor het aantal variaties dat als
nakomeling kan ontstaan oploopt tot 64 triljoen (8 miljoen x
8 miljoen).
