Staging and Evaluating the Event
Introduction
In this piece I will staging an event that has be planned extensively to reach a common goal. I will
also be evaluating this event to demonstrate what kinds of issues we faced and how we overcame
these to achieve the desired outcome of developing teamwork between one another as a simulation
of a real work place exercise.
The Event
On the build up to October 5th, we made sure that everyone was prepared through verbal and
written communication that they obtained a packed lunch if they did not wish to spend personal
funds, but also that they wore adequate clothing and footwear to ensure they did not damage any
valuable items in the process of the day. On the morning of event day, we began by arriving at
school at 8:30 as we have planned to have left by 8:50, to ensure that we could fit in the planned
number of events for each team. As we arrived however, we came across our first issue of the day.
Through bad luck, the mini bus driver who agreed to drive the journey to our destination was no
longer available, we turned to our contingency plan as this had already been considered. This proves
the importance of a plan as without it we may have been very stuck, postponing the events, loosing
out financially and potentially causing adverse effects of the teams as what was expected. We
managed to contact a backup driver to act as a replacement. As a result, the time we left to reach
our destination was later which did have a negative knock on affect as we ended up arriving later
than anticipated. Once again, we turned to our contingency plan as we realised that the time left
available would not be enough for all the events to be fitted in. We had already planned for this and
it meant that two teams had to combine, the orienteering group and the treasure hunting group.
Once we got to the location we started the day off with the biking event this event as a whole was
successful however some people were lost but luckily, we had planned in case this happened which
showed good planning from the leaders involved which had the phone numbers of everyone so in
case people were lost they could be contacted. Also, people always stayed with at least one other
person therefore they wouldn’t ever be lost by themselves. Due to the size of the crew, one of the
team leaders was able to locate the riders who had become separated after taking a wrong turn by
retracing their steps. He stayed with them and helped them get back on track, allowing everyone to
reassemble and carry on. The purpose of this activity was intended to foster teamwork and a sense
of camaraderie among participants, which would have facilitated the development of relationships
for the foreseeable future as people had to cooperate in order to figure out where to go. I
contributed to this event in a sense that I communicated with one of the leaders that some of the
group had fallen behind and as a result has disappeared. Due to the effective planning of the team
leaders, a contingency plan was put to good use to ensure that the event they were conducting ran
rather smoothly and overall achieved their goals to develop teamwork. As jokes began to develop
there was a positive atmosphere within the event which proved that the event had been conducted
well and was very successful.
The next event was the footballing event, which took place in the amphitheatre. We utilised the
equipment, we hired from Betteshanger to complete this teambuilding exercise. We used two goals
and a football. We divided into two teams based on the numbers strategy where we had two
captains and numbered each other, this allowed the teams to be randomly selected to prevent any
disagreements. The event was a success overall since it very successfully achieved its goal of
fostering teamwork, which would further enhance relationships among the crew. Also, as
