MF Gyms PLC Report
16/01/2023
Report addressed to CEO of MF Gyms Plc

Within this report, it will include necessary information that will suggest issues within the
company, incorporating management and leadership styles and skills and their contributions
to the problems. Followed by recommendations to benefit already established company.
MF Gym PLC was a successful fitness brand with around 20 gyms around the country,
consisting of multiple head offices with a laid back approach to the operational side to their
company which may have led to the downfall of their company.
To begin with, the first issue that I will demonstrate is their methodology of leadership. As a
leader it is essential that employees are motivated within the company to work and provide
the best possible service to ensure that the customer is satisfied. This leads to positive
reviews, attracting more customers and expanding the company which overall leads to a
developed profit. From the case study provided, it is clear that the leadership has provided
the workforce too much flexibility. When this occurs the company can crumble, as laziness
replaces motivation, employees get too comfortable and as a result the quality of work
becomes sloppy, reducing the customer satisfaction. Evidenced by the numerous weekly
staff meetings that developed into social gatherings
It would be beneficial to the company if a new style of management and leadership was
introduced, that allowed the power to remain with the leaders of the company instead of it
residing with the employees. A slightly more autocratic approach would allow the company
to redirect the employees back onto meeting the aims and objectives of the company as a
more authoritative view is implemented, to ensure it remained a top competitor. One way
that this could be done is by conducting a self-assessment. This would provide the
leadership team, consisting of 15 head offices, the necessary information to discover what
kind of issues they may be faced with and then coming to a conclusion on how to better this
and mitigate the potential consequences. This will see a better commercial relationship
between the employees and leadership. It is evident that the laissez-faire approach is not
working shown by their declining profit margins and missed targets, where no one was held
accountable. Introducing a new system, where the employee’s opinions are still voiced, but
providing them tasks and goals that result in the employees benefitting from if they are met
to a suitable standard. There is a theory that suggests there are a mix of motivational factors
(non-financial and hygiene factors) that offer the employees the necessary eagerness to get
the job done to the highest possible standard. This is known as the Herzberg two factor
theory of motivation. Providing the employees with the incentive of financial gains like
yearly bonuses if all tasks are met will sky-rocket the development of the company while
satisfying the employees. Additionally, it will build strong relationships between the
workforce and its higher powers. It is essential that the opinion is of management is still
seen to be heard by the leadership from the employees to ensure that they remain happy
