Megan Middleton Care pathways & strategies for the chosen disorders Unit 14. M2, D1

M2- Discuss how the practitioners and agencies involved in the care pathways work together to
provide the care needed for both physiological disorders.

D1- Evaluate the effectiveness of health and social care practitioners and agencies working
together to deliver the care pathway for one of the chosen physiological disorders.

Care pathways can be delivered by both formal and informal carers. Each of these carers can fulfil
many needs, giving the patient the care that they require. A formal carer must follow codes of
conduct. This type of carer may be employed by an organisation or the patient themselves, however,
this is not common. An informal carer may be someone such as a family member or friend to the
patient. Their role is to provide emotional and physical support to the individuals, they may do this
by assisting them with walking, sitting etc. as well as encouraging them when they feel hopeless due
to their disorder. There are an estimated 6million informal carers within the United Kingdom, many
of them being children looking after a parent or sibling. Informal carers are required to work around
the clock, while receiving no payment for this, meaning that the government saves billions of
pounds. Being an informal carer for somebody can lead to a number of issues for the individual
providing the care. This may include lack of attendance in the work or education setting, causing
issues in those areas. As well as health issues that may come from a lack of rest and self-care, this
will then lead to a strain on NHS resources and funding.

Education may be affected if a child or young person is acting as an informal carer, this may be due
to poor attendance and failure to meet deadlines. Older informal carers may have their jobs affected
as they will be regularly absent from the work place and may not be able to focus on their work
duties. This can lead to dismissal from the individual’s current job and a lack of employability for
future job opportunities. Due to this the informal carer may also need to receive benefits in order to
have finances to survive. This will cause a great strain on the government as a large number of
people will be claiming these extra finances. The informal carer will be exposed to a great deal of
stress, leading them to have a lack of trust and respect for the NHS, meaning that they are less likely
to use these services for other matters. The informal carer will also be inexperienced when it comes
to monitoring the patients’ health, meaning that the patient will be put at risk. The carer also does
not have contact with district nurses, therefore, the patient will not receive the help that they need
when it is required. In addition to this, the carer will be unable to assist the patient when it comes to
being mobile, this can lead to the patient falling over and injuring themselves, causing further issues.
In contrast to this, an informal carer will provide great company and support to the individual
receiving the care, this is due to the carer having the patient’s best interests at heart as they care for
the individual in a way that a formal carer cannot. An informal carer will also be aware of any
routines that the patient may have, meaning that the patient will be more content with an informal
carer. Informal carers have more time to spend with the patient, meaning that they will be there in
the event of an emergency, this is not the case with formal carers as they only have a set amount of
time to spend with a patient. An informal carer also saves the government money as a formal carer
requires expenditures such as;
 sick pay
 holiday pay
 holiday cover
 maternity leave
 employer contributions
is lawfully required for a formal carer. Whereas an informal is not entitled to such benefits as they
are not a part of a care company. Also, a number of local authority’s assign services to organisations
instead of to the services directly. An example of this may be a bus company providing a shuttle bus
service for a local hospital. This will allow the hospital’s patients to get from one hospital to another
without any stress.
