An equation is a mathematical statement stating that two
expressions are equal. In mathematical notation two expressions are
shown to be equal by means of an equals (=) sign.
Examples of equations
a) 3x + 4 = 3 b) z 4 + 4z 2 − 3 = 0
Equations with degree 1 e.g. 3x + 4 = 4x − 2 are called linear
equations. Equations of degree 2 e.g. −3x 2 + x = 2 are called
quadratic equations.
, Multiplication property of Equality
The multiplication property of equality states that when we
multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the two
sides remain equal.
I For example, if x4 = 2, then multiply both side of this equation
by, say 4, both sides remain equal.
