Chemistry Lab Report Name: Date: Experiment #: 1 Title: Equipment, Safety, and Mass/Volume Measurement Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to learn how to be safe while working in the chemistry lab. Also, to learn about different equipment and how it is used properly in the chemistry lab setting. Lastly, to learn how to measure mass and volume using different equipment. Procedure: Analytical Balance Mass Measurement: 1) Five (5) analytical balances should be placed on a countertop and zeroed. 2) A cell phone is placed on analytical balance 1. 3) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 1 in grams for the mass of the cell phone. 4) The cell phone is removed from the analytical balance. 5) A graduated cylinder is placed on analytical balance 1. 6) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 1 in grams for the mass of the graduated cylinder. 7) The graduated cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. 8) A metal cylinder is placed on analytical balance 1. 9) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 1 in grams for the mass of the metal cylinder. 10) The metal cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. 11) The same cell phone is placed on analytical balance 2. 12) A value is read and recorded f rom analytical balance 2 in grams for the mass of the cell phone. 13) The cell phone is removed from the analytical balance. 14) The same graduated cylinder is placed on analytical balance 2. 15) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 2 in grams for the mass of the graduated cylinder. 16) The graduated cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. 17) The same metal cylinder is placed on analytical balance 2. 18) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 2 in grams for the mass of the metal cylinder. 19) The metal cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. 20) The same cell phone is placed on analytical balance 3. 21) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 3 in grams for the mass of the cell phone. 22) The cell phone is removed from the analytical balance. 23) The same graduated cylinder is placed on analytical balance 3. Chemistry Lab Report 24) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 3 in grams for the mass of the graduated cylinder. 25) The graduated cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. 26) The same metal cylinder is placed on analytical balance 3. 27) A value is read and recorded from analytical balance 3 in grams for the mass of the metal cylinder. 28) The metal cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. Triple -Beam Balance Mass Measurement: 1. A triple beam balance should be placed on a countertop and all weights should be placed at zero. 2. The same metal cylinder from the above experiment is used and placed on the triple - beam balance. 3. Begin by sliding the largest capacity beam to the first notch causing the pointer to drop. 4. Move the weight back to the left until it reaches zero and the pointer rises. 5. Repeat step 3 with the next capacity beam, sliding the weight to the first notch. 6. Repeat step 3 with all capacity beams until the pointer rests at zero. 7. A value is read and recorded from the triple -beam balance in grams for the mass of the metal cylinder. 8. The metal cylinder is removed from the triple -beam balance. Single Pan Balance Mass Measurement: 1. Three (3) single pan balances should be placed on a countertop and zeroed. 2. A cell phone is placed on single pan balance 1. 3. A value is read and recorded from single pan balance 1 in grams for the mass of the cell phone. 4. The cell phone is removed from the single pan balance. 5. A graduated cylinder is placed on single pan balance 1. 6. A value is read and recorded from single pan balance 1 in grams for the mass of the graduated cylinder. 7. The graduated cylinder is removed from the single pan balance. 8. A metal cylinder is placed on single pan balance 1. 9. A value is read and recorded from single pan balance 1 in grams for the mass of the metal cylinder. 10. The metal cylinder is removed from the analytical balance. Buret Volume Measurement: 1. A buret is filled to the zero point with water. 2. A beaker is placed on the analytical balance and zeroed. 3. 10.10 ml of water is added to the beaker from the buret by using a stopcock. 4. A value is read and recorded from the analytical balance in grams for the mass of 10.1 ml of water. 5. The calculation V=M/D is used to determine the actual volume of water delivered by the buret. 6. Percent error is calculated. % error in V=[value added to beaker from buret – calculated volume from formula]/value added to beaker from buret x 100.
