Introduction
According to the Royal Society of Chemistry (2021), “Chemistry is a laboratory science
and cannot be effectively taught without a robust laboratory experience for students at both the
middle and high school levels.” In other words, it involves laboratory activities to effectively gain
different knowledge of Chemistry. By doing laboratory experiments, the students will develop
various skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving ability, conceptual understanding, and
practical abilities (for example, designing an experiment, recording data, and analyzing and
interpreting results obtained from experiments). Additionally, performing activities in the
Chemical laboratory promote aspects of scientific thinking and the scientific method. The ability
for students to learn with understanding while also participating in the process of building
knowledge through science is what makes laboratory activities appealing.
, With this in mind, identification, manipulation, and general usage of laboratory equipment
are essential components of the course before participating in laboratory experiments. It is crucial
to comprehend the significance of lab safety as laboratories provide a wide variety of safety risks,
from chemicals to electrical equipment. Although safety is a top priority when designing
laboratories, accidents or dangerous events may still occur such as injuries and equipment
damages. Therefore, being aware of laboratory tools and equipment as well as the policies and
guidelines is a must. Students will help to prevent or eliminate hazards by being familiar with the
laboratory they are working in and constantly adhering to the correct safety protocols
(ELITechGroup, 2016).
Results and Discussion
Upon exploring the laboratory equipment, and its uses, the researchers learned to identify,
manipulate and differentiate the tools that will be used in the experiments. Moreover, the
importance of the policies and guidelines in the chemistry laboratory was also apprehended. These
learnings will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
One of the laboratory equipment studied is the spatula. The spatula used for spooning solid
chemicals from a reagent bottle should be clean and dry to avoid contamination of reagents. The
reagent bottle would quickly fill with dirt if put an unclean spatula in it, destroying the chemicals
within or resulting in dangerous chemical reactions.
Figure 1. Using Spatula for spooning solid chemicals
Reagent bottles are where solid chemicals are generally stored and it is covered by stoppers.
Flat-topped stoppers must be positioned with their flat sides on the table because there are chances
that it will highly likely roll and break off. But more importantly, it is placed on the flat side of the
table to avoid contaminating the chemical when the stopper is put back on the bottle (Cerritos
College, n.d.).
Chemicals are frequently stirred or poured using a glass rod. The glass rod is used in
transferring or pouring chemicals because it can significantly lessen chemical spills and splashes
since it directs the liquid to run along the rod down to another beaker (Frasle, 2015). Additionally,
in heating chemicals in a test tube, a person should not be pointed to anyone simply because
