, The goal of this manual is to fulfill users’ expectations for assessment questions and at the same
time follow the tenets of what assessment should be as described in the text. Two principles of
assessment guide the information presented: Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, and
the use of multiple sources for assessment of student learning. Whereas true and false and
multiple choice test items are included, they generally measure the lowest levels on Bloom’s
Taxonomy. Short essay and assignment assessments are included to provide more in depth
application of chapter contents. We would hope that instructors would model the use of
performance assessments, checklists, rubrics, portfolios, etc. in their repertoire of assessments for
the course.
Please note that the assessments in the handbook are merely suggestions. The best
assessments are designed by the instructor for individual classes.
