Het Britse Rijk strekte zich uit over de hele wereld. Maar welke gebieden precies in handen waren
van de Britten veranderde door de tijd heen. Dit wordt op kaarten snel duidelijk. In 1774 bezaten de
Britten verschillende koloniën in Noord-Amerika. Daar zou twee jaar later een grote verandering in
plaatsvinden, toen dertien koloniën aan de oostkust in opstand kwamen en zich van Groot-Brittannië
afscheidden. De gebieden in het noorden (het huidige Canada) en in het Caraïbische gebied bleven
langer onder Brits bestuur. In India vestigde de East India Company zich in eerste instantie nabij
steden als Madras, Bombay en Calcutta. Van daaruit verwierven de Britten steeds meer macht. Nadat
het bestuur in 1858 was overgegaan naar de regering in Groot-Brittannië, verwierven de Britten nog
meer gebieden in India. Qua grootte bereikte het Britse Rijk in de jaren 20 van de 20e eeuw zijn
hoogtepunt.
