“The future is female” is a popular phrase used to describe the strides women
have made in business and in their communities. Encapsulated by Madame Gandhi,
a popular blogger and activist, the slogan “the future is female” does not mean
females over male, it means that “circular organisations of leadership may serve
each one of us better than hierarchical ones”.
This statement is synonymous with the works of the SLA founders Yasmin Belo-
Osagie and Afua Osei.
When this Pan African networking movement was launched in 2014, the aim was
to connect Pan-African female entrepreneurs by providing digital networking and
an empowerment platform that would build the profile of women in business
across the continent of Africa. Within a month of the launch, their movement
caught the attention of over 500 applicants in over 25 countries. Today, through
various programmes such as pitch competitions for aspiring entrepreneurs,
accelerator programmes and grants, SLA connects over 150 000 women from
more than 30 countries. Through the online content and Pan African events, SLA
provides training and mentorship to young professional women and entrepreneurs.
Other programmes include training on business strategy, digital marketing and
finance. Their events include masterclasses and a popular event called the SLAY
festival where expert-led sessions discuss topics such as securing promotions,
monetising creativity and creating wealth beyond the pay cheque. By joining their
online platform, members get access to daily support on business management
and building a successful career. The vision of SLA is to identify, support and fund
the next generation of female entrepreneurs. The #SheMeansBusiness is free digital
marketing training offered in partnership with Facebook. This training teaches
female entrepreneurs how to utilise digital resources to help take their business
online and compete in a global marketplace. The She Means Business training
