2.2- Evaluate the effectiveness of media used in campaigns for change

One use of social media in campaigns is Social Networking. This is an online platform that allows you
to create a public account for users to interact with. Some examples of this are Twitter, Instagram,
Facebook. One advantage of this method is approximately 2.3 billion people use social media every
day and with the use of hashtags and visual images, its able to reach a lot of people allowing them to
trend a lot quicker and catch people’s attention. Eye catching visuals make people want to look at
the message and will make them more likely to read the whole page. With social Media pages being
free and easy to set up, they are a lot more available for more people to share and create
campaigns.

Despite that, messages are easy to scroll past or get lost as there is so much content on social media
every day. And although a message might reach lots of people, it doesn’t mean change follows or
people act on what they read. This means social media is often better for creating awareness instead
of change.

An example of this is the Cancer research #NoMakeUpSelfie movement that involved posting photos
of their true self-without any makeup. This became popular with a lot of Hollywood faces, with
women then nominating their friends to raise awareness and donations. In less than a week,
donations reached over £8 million for Cancer research UK. This is an example of how effective social
media is for spreading awareness of something very quickly in a cheap way.

Tv Advertising is another type of media used. This has the aim of showing a specific social, political or
sales pitch into a small amount of time to generate demand for a product, service or cause.

Advantages of this is that it can target either specific or wider audiences, depending on when it’s
placed in the Tv schedule and with the combination of visuals and sounds it can create a better
experience for the viewers and create more of an impact that they are likely to remember. However,
on the other side, it is a very expensive form of promotion especially if they are shown in prime-time
slots and those watching tv on catch up can just skip adverts they aren’t interested in. The biggest
disadvantage to this is viewing figures are constantly declining- in 2017 73% and now in 2022 its at
53% and it’s predicted to continue falling next year. Tv also has the same problem as social media as
it’s a lot more effective at spreading awareness than creating change.

The Dogs trust’s, little balloon doggy advert, publicity and information cost £3.6 million in 2018,
however animal rehoming statistics increased from 11,568 in 2005 to 12,622 in 2018 as a result of
this showing advertisements do have impacts on the viewers to act on what they see.

A Third is public appearances which can include ceremonial, informative and persuasive speaking.
This is a form of communicating to a large audience or group of people such as in schools,
workplaces, in the media and in all different types of events. This method gives a personal and
realistic touch and viewers can see the ‘true’ emotions of the speaker. This is more likely to catch the
public’s attention and raise awareness. One limitation to this is some people may focus more on the
pain and distress of others instead of what’s being said, resulting in no changes in behaviour.

In 2000, Sarah Payne was kidnapped and killed by a known sex offender in the area. Her parents
campaigned and used public appearances several times to promote their campaign for the creation
