A1 Professional Mission Statement

My professional goal, following acquisition of my BSN, is two-pronged. The first is to

obtain a management position within my facility. The second is to obtain my master’s degree in

Nursing Management. Guiding me to reach this goal is my passion for advocacy.

Too often in my career I have felt that I have been unable to advocate effectively for both

my patients and my co-workers. It appears many decisions that have been made are “above my

pay grade”. By obtaining my MSN in Nursing Management, I hope to be able to have a greater

voice in the decision-making process and make changes that will produce positive results for all

involved. This is where I want to focus my time and energies within my profession – advocating

effectively for policy decisions that will result in a positive impact for both nurses and their

patients.

This professional mission statement will, and has, helped guide me throughout my career

by serving as a focal point for my career decisions. It allows me to ask myself “How can I be a

better advocate?” and then act on the answers I obtain. Focusing on this has given me the

determination and drive to rapidly progress through my classes at WGU. It has also enabled me

to volunteer my time and energies towards making policy changes at my facility. It has enabled

me to be active in the Washington State Nurses Association and push for changes in state laws

that will eventually benefit all stakeholders.

A2 a&b Professional Summary and Artifacts

My artifacts and completed works demonstrate how I was able to combine my experience

as a nurse with the skills I have learned through my classes at WGU to enhance my research and

, critical thinking skills. They demonstrate how I can take an issue, research it, and apply the

information towards real-world problems in my workplace and in my community. The artifacts

that best demonstrates this are my evidence-based practice research paper (see appendix) and my

leadership experience of developing a formal mentoring program for my unit (see appendix –

C493 Task 1). In my evidence-based practice paper I was able to use the knowledge gained to

advocate for the development of a bundle to prevent central line infections. During my

leadership experience, I was able to present a realistic evidence-based solution to my unit’s

problem of retaining newly graduated registered nurses. I believe that both demonstrate my

research and critical thinking skills, my professional strengths.

A2c Challenges

I have experienced many challenges during this program. The first challenge occurred the

first time a performance assessment was rejected. It was a frustrating experience! I overcame this

challenge by rereading the rubric and reading the details of the submission evaluation. I also

reached out to my instructor for guidance. In addition to utilizing the resources available to me, I

learned to put my personal feelings aside and focus on the task at hand. This resulted in a

passing grade after the resubmission. The second big challenge I faced was the decision to

accelerate my studies and complete the program in a single term. It has been difficult meeting

that goal. I have been able to overcome that challenge by putting my personal life on hold,

turning down extra shifts at work, and dedicating myself to completion of each course as it

became available. I found it helpful to not look too far ahead, but to just focus on one course at a

time. Otherwise, I was in danger of letting the amount of classwork remaining overwhelm me.

Other challenges I faced were both my Statistics and Bio Chem classes. Although I had both
