Lesvos
Introduction:
For the second part of this task I am required to evaluate why Lesvo has
declined as a destination. Firstly, Lesvos (also known as Lesbos or Mitilini)
is a Greek island. It’s situated off the coast of turkey in the Aegean Sea.
The island has an area of 1,633 km2. It has the population of 86,436
people. The capital city of Lesvos is Mytilene. Lesvos has a rich historical
and cultural heritage as well as remarkable natural landscapes. The
island consists of unspoilt historical sites. It has mountain ski resorts as
well as beaches. In terms of why it has declined as a destination, there
are many factors that resulted to the decrease of tourist numbers in
Lesvos. One of the main reason on why Lesvos as well as all the other
islands in Greece are declining is because of the troubles in Greece
itself. By Greece being in debt, it has brought forth many
complications, especially in their tourism. Greece has been in debt for
the last decade or so and they can’t seem to get out of it. They got
the loan from the European union and they can’t pay it back. That
map above should give you an insight as to where Lesvos is located.
Also, as you can see from the map, Lesvos is close to Turkey which is
one of Lesvos prime source as to where the tourists are coming from.
Turkish people tend to visit Lesvos regularly because of its accessibility.
