Het bevochtigen van harde contactlenzen wordt gedaan om vier redenen:
1. Lensoppervlak bevochtigd houden
2. Behoudt van hydraterende staat
3. Desinfectie
4. Mechanische buffer tussen lens en cornea
Conserveringsmiddelen (preservatives) doden micro-organismen (bactericidal agents) of gaan groei
daarvan tegen (bacteriostatic agents) en hebben de volgende eigenschappen:
1. Nodige mate van desinfectie
2. Sluiten toxische reacties uit
3. Voorkomen negatieve effecten op de lens bevochtiging en parameters
4. Verbeteren verenigbaarheid met de traanfilm
