The Scientists in DNA

There were many scientists involved in the discovering the DNA and creating the molecular
structure of the DNA we know of today.

The main scientists include:
- Friedrich Miescher
- Erwin Chargaff
- Rosalind Franklin
- Maurice Wilkins
- Francis Crick
- James Watson

Timeline of the events

Early discovery

1869: Friedrich Miescher was the first to identify DNA as a distinct molecule. He isolated the
“nuclein”, a phosphorus-rich protein found in the nucleus of a cell.

Development of Research

1951: Francis Crick and James Watson were puzzling over the structure of DNA together.

1952: Rosalind Franklin used x-ray photographs to determine the structure of a molecule.

1950: Erwin Chargaff proposed two rules named Chargaff’s rules: in natural DNA, the number
of guanine units equals the number of cytosine units and the number of adenine units equals
the number of thymine units. Chargaff’s research would later help the Watson and Crick
laboratory team to deduce the double helical structure of DNA.

Early 1953: Watson and Crick used Wilkin’s x-ray studies of DNA to help them build their
model. Franklin’s x-ray photographs learned that DNA can exist in two different forms. She
concluded that phosphate groups must be on the outside. One of the two forms looked very
much like a helix. It was a clear picture of a helix, Watson and Crick realised that DNA must
contain two chains of nucleotides going in opposite directions, with bases in the middle.
