ADAPTING & THRIVING IN A VUCA WORLD
● Self-Care: Managing Energy, Attention & Stress
○ There are limited energy and attention resources in the brain that get depleted
throughout the day; replenished by good food, sleep, etc.
○ The brain is a “cognitive meiser”: only 2% of body mass but consumes 25% of
caloric intake– motivated to expend as little energy as possible to reserve energy
for other things.
○ Types of Stressors
Eustress: positive stress; good psychologically and physically.
Distress: negative stress; if not maintained, it can cause physiologically and
psychologically undesirable effects.

● Self-Care Lab for a VUCA World
○ Introduction: The Social Context
If we wrote The Windsor Star: 8,000,000,000 Brains gone Limbic!
In short, we are in a period in history where 8 Billion people are far more
emotional and significantly less intelligent than they were just 3 years ago.
What’s a VUCA Environment?
● V = Volatility: the nature and dynamics of change, and the nature
and speed of change forces and change catalysts.
● U = Uncertainty: the lack of predictability; the prospects for
surprise, and the sense of a loss of awareness and understanding
of issues and events.
● C = Complexity: the multiplex of forces, the confounding of issues,
no cause-and-effect chain and confusion that surrounds
organization.
● A = Ambiguity: the haziness of reality, the potential for misreads,
and the mixed meanings of conditions; cause-and-effect
confusion.
● The Origins of “VUCA”: originated in the US military. Devised as a
description of the Post-Cold War landscape and first referenced in
print in 1991, its use became more frequent in the military
Post-9/11 as a way of articulating the new world in which the US
military would be operating
