procedures contribute to safe practice in a selected health and social care setting.
Distinction Evaluate the importance of safety practice principles in maintaining and
promoting the health, safety and welfare of service users in a selected health and
social care setting.
Storage and administration of medication:
This statutory affirms that medications are under control to certain people who have the knowledge of
how the prescription works and would be beneficial to serve the service users according to the
prescribers needs for the patients. This statement has a significant role for the safety and security of the
patient when it comes to medications, as specific medications can also internally harm them if given
wrongly or wrongly instructions. It has several legislation in orders to manage and manage the safe
storage/administration of the medicines, this includes, the Care Standards Act 2000, Health and Social
Care Act 2008, Health Act 2006, Medicines Act 1986, Human Medicines Regulation 2012, Misuse of
drugs Act 1971, Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. In this section I will be discussing about the Human
Medicines Regulation 2012.
The legislation Human Medicines Regulations 2012 is a major progress for the medicine industry and
helps to manage the patients accordingly. This legislation is in place as the statutory assigned certain
groups to administer medications to service user according to their condition, health and evaluating
their health (allergies, past disease, pre/on-going medications), these factors are important for the
professionals such as doctors, pharmacist and dentist should know before prescribing them medicine.
This legislation has made it easy for professionals to understand its simplest form. For example,
midwives can prescribe medication to patients without consulting a senior doctor/GP. As they would
also have the authority and knowledge about medication within their education. The benefit of this
legislation is that it assures the safety of manufacturing in an effective way that keeps the control of the
dosage/drug/quantity, understand where to certainly import and provide the medications to who for
example, they should only import to hospitals, pharmacies, dentists, clinics and not directly to a house
,without the administration of professional's prescriptions. It also makes it easier for the manufacturers
to label them as manufactured to keep control while supplying them. The potential
implications/purpose is to build a healthier service that does not damage an individual's life by getting
the wrong medications (as it may not have correct instructions/drugs quantity written). The staff should
be aware while prescribing medications, as it has a significant impact while managing a patient's life and
health. To provide effective medications and the right choice of medicines to service user.
A medicines Administration Record Chart is NOT an authority to administer medication. This precisely
exhibits the medications handed by the professionals to the patients. The pharmacies and hospitals
record keeping structure of all, and sundry past and present medications prescribed. Despite that, it
does not allow them to prescribe them new medications even if it is moderately the same. This would
succor to keep a safe distance from giving wrong medications, as the moderately same medications to
present prescriptions may also have slightly different drugs within them that may cause negative
impacts on the patients, as they may have side effects/allergic reaction to that medicine. A Palliative
Care Medicines chart signed by a doctor is an e.g., authority to administer. It is preferred for the service
users to self-medicate such as the common pain killers. Whereas the high dose medication is always
administered by the professionals such as the pharmacist and doctors. As they have the knowledge of it
and are trained appropriately before the authorization to administer the medications. In the case of
Zara, she had a mental illness, which means that she should have been given high dose medication and
the medication that can only be prescribed by the doctor.
Care staff the prescription (look at both sides) when it is picked up and to document this in the service
user’s support plan. This is an important role to be completed carefully by the care staff members, as
with their attentive behavior while documenting all the medications in the support plan, would in future
succor to build a medicine record and would ease the patients to get the same prescription after it has
finished, as their assurance, re-checking and confirming with the senior doctors would build the safety
and confirmation that the patient is being given the needed and right medications. If the care staff
negligence in this subject, then it may directly impact on the patients' health, as they may be consuming
wrong medications (the prescription can be for longer term such as 6-months course), it can directly
lead to death or severe health conditions, such as coma, paralysis, brain damage.
If they are not prescribed, they may not legally be administered. This is a statement to concede, as it
would have a huge contribution to a person's life death or severe health conditions. Despite that there
are certain unaffected medications such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or any mild pain killers, cough
medications, hay fevers and migraine. These mild and normal health issues medications are easily
available and are authorized to people over 16 years of age. It is important to follow these steps, it is the
safe way to manage medication, as they will be prescribed to patients according to their body needs and
condition, for example, same certain medication may be prescribed to two patients, but they may be
given different dose level, diverse timing. As the medication would impact the individual’s body. It is
important to store the medication, such as in correct temperature, sunlight exposures, weather such as
humidity. As these factors can affect the chemicals inside the medicine, which can be harmful if it is
given to the individuals. There are some medications that needs to be stored in the cool place such as
fridge, due to the medicine requirements. According to the administration responsibilities, the have the
duty to remind the patient to take the medications on time, and according to detail written on the
medicine. The labels such as names, consumption amount, time of the day, address, should be available
and written on the medications administered. They may have different types of consumption, for some
, they have all the types such as oral, liquid, tablets, injections. They can be prescribed to the patient
according to the they prefer to have, such as some prefer tablet forms. But there are medicines that
needs to be given in the essential form, and it may not have the same medicine in other forms. But it is
important to have the full course of medication at the right, amount. It is the professional’s duty to
monitor the reaction of the medicine on the patient, to check if it is effective, as there are medications
that are effective to treat the disease, but it may side effects or negative effects on the patient, for
which the professionals may need to use alternative medication. In the case of Zara, the medications
side effects can be also the reason she has changed her behavior, such as she may have start to feel cold
due to the high dose of medications, her body may not be responding to it effectively, the professionals
could have assessed her changes, medically and socially. It is important for the professionals to manage
the medication of the patients especially when the patients are admitted in the hospitals/care
home/residential homes. Because in these department the patients are the responsibility of the
professionals. In the Zara case, she may have not been given the medication times, which can be the
reason that she is not improving or recovering. This shows the negligence of the professionals, that if
they are there provide care to the patients, then this is what they should be focusing all the time. In the
children case, they were being treated but were not essentially given the care they needed, such as
protected from harm. It is important to keep the medication in a safe place which means that it should
be kept away from the patients, such as vulnerable individuals. They are suggested and guided to be
stored in a safe place such as specified cupboards, draws, shelf, in a specified room just for the
medication, under labels to ensure that the medications are justified and if there is shortage, the care
manager would be able to go and restock the medication if the medications are kept in their labelled
area. The draws/shelf needs to have the name, dosage, amount of the medication, for example a shelf
has a unit of paracetamols, and the medicines are almost lack
Medicine management
Adverse drug reactions should be according to the authorization of the medications stated above.
Medicine management guidance, this guidance states the assurance that succor to follow to statutory
legislation that provides safe practice and constantly check its expiration, distribution, manufacturing,
labelling, for the service user. Administration levels, there are 4 stages to provide the assured, and
precise medications to the service user, the stages follow as, first the doctor prescribes it directly to the
patient, then the prescription is sent to the pharmacy to prepare and describe the instructions according
to the medical chart, then the nurse will scrutinize the medications and assure with the prescriber
(GP/Doctor), to provide the conventional medications to the patient. At the end of this process, the
patient takes the medications and completes the specific time consulted by the doctors.
Administration responsibilities are assessed at three levels. Level 1 is when the patients would have
access to their medications which means that they may choose their medications themselves when
needed by the chemist/pharmacy, medications such as, paracetamol, ibuprofen, ointment, pain killers,
healing sprays, creams etc. Level 2 is when the patient would still have accessibility/control over
selecting their medications despite being under professionals' assistance and instructions. For example,
take after food, take an hour after, take once a day. For this level, the administrations are responsible
for the service user's safety such as doing certain maneuvers for example, medicine reminders, aid such
as blood temperature level monitor, assuring that the labels and information are accurate that has been
ordered. Level 3 provides succor such as when the patients are unable to manage their own medications
and they specifically require help from professionals. This is important because, to provide them with
