Learning Aim, A

Unit 8: Promoting Public Health

Health in Bradford

In this assignment I will be explaining and evaluating the factors that are affecting the health in
the Local authority such as Bradford and the impact of the policy publicly, I will be including the
relevant secondary research which will support the assignment to involve accurate information to
support with the understanding of the factors that are recently and have been impacting the
society.

Alcohol

Excessively consuming alcohol would impact the health, such as directly to the body, which include
diseases like cancer (lung cancer are the common cancer type from alcohol, heart disease due to
high cholesterol level, high blood and sugar level, liver cancer as the alcohol chemicals damages the
body organs directly). Consuming alcohol in large would not just physically harm them, but also
harm their social, intellectual, and emotional health, they may physically gain weight, get cancer,
heart disease, stroke, liver and lung disease/cancer, mouth/throat. This can impact on their social
health for example, they may be unemployed because of their inability to be able to focus while
working, as they may feel emotionally drained all the time, they may be tired all time, their bones
can be effected, as they would have thickened blood due to alcohol misuse, it may weaken the
immune system, which can impact on their eating habits and ability to fight with the disease they
may contact.

They may be intellectually not strong enough to take the responsibility of a family, as the individual
would want to be independent and want no one to stop them from the alcohol misuse. They may
drink alcohol due to lifestyle events, such as divorce, homelessness, financial issues. If an individual
has made it used to having more than 2 standards amount of alcohol, it can impact the user
intellectually, by making them dependent and addicted, they may start wanting to consume more.
For example, while they are drunk and have no control over their feelings, and self-control. This
means that the individual is at higher risk of getting harmed, such as accidents may occur, as he may
start driving while being drunk, or lose control over themselves and stand in the middle of the road,
which can increase the risk of getting injured. It is stated than more than 1 in 10 patients visits A&E,
due to alcohol related issues, this means that consuming over a limit amount means that they are
harming themselves additionally. Violent behaviours are stated to be 1.2 million, as people loses
control and starts to misbehave with the people around, this can happen because their life event
have impacted their brain, that they may only think that certain criteria and may start shouting in
the area. They may get ill every time they drink which can mean that they may take a day/week off
from the workplace, this would also impact on their life, as the employment/education would be
neglected. (Alcohol misuse - Risks - NHS (www.nhs.uk))

For each sample of alcohol there are diverse affect and units of them, for example, there are units
from 1 to 12 (can be drunk more than 12 units, but it would be highly harmful). Due to this
consumptions into units, they would have its sign and symptoms, such as they may start doing things
they have never done or do not prefer to do, vomit more than once, may become violent, they may

, get cirrhosis which is a skin disease, they may get stomach ulcers, may become depressed, there
reaction may be slower, as it would have affected the brain, such as forebrain that makes the
decision, midbrain that control the emotions and hindbrain that may lose the appetite, increase
heart rate, might be more hungry than usual. It has been prohibited for pregnant women to
consume alcohol, as it may affect premature birth, birth diseases, premature death, infertility. It can
possibly also lead to death, if the dose is over exceeded, as it would cause poisoning to the body, of
drunk daily or more than 14 units a week which means that the individual is damaging the health.
They are advised to not have more than 14 units per week on routine, because this can mean that
they will be physically always tired, exhausted, they may start to behave aggressive in the public,
such as they may also fight and become uncontrollable. From 1-6 drinks of alcohol, they would go
through different phases, such as from the first 1-3 drinks they would physically be present, in their
senses partially, but may also start feeling drowsiness, numbness in the body, they may be
emotionally imbalanced, less reaction time, from the drink 4-6, they would go through multiple
switches in behaviour, such as mood swings, aggressiveness, emotionally depressed even if they may
not have any stressful event recently, they may behave socially inappropriately, they would lose
their self-control and consciousness by now, they may lose their self-balance, and ability to focus,
their eye sight may fluctuate, by this time, it is risky for them to drive, as they would get into an
accident or harm any other individual on the road. These are the short term affects, as it would
affect their intellectual, physical, emotional, and social health for the time, such as for the night, they
may get headache and be angry when they wake up the next day. Whereas there is long term affect
which can affect on the health and cause diseases, cancers, addiction. It is stated that 11% of the
death are due to alcohol in Bradford, which are the early deaths. In 2019, It is stated that around
92,000 individuals are consuming alcohol at a hazardous level, this means that the health rates are
damaging, within these 17000 are consuming at harmful levels

Drugs

documents/People are living their lives... )

Being addicted to drugs can be due to the environmental factors, such as the area individual may
lives in, may be high in crime, drugs and alcohol, this can directly lead the individual to intake drugs,
as they would see the people around them consuming, there are peers as well who influences the
children/young people to be a part of there group and have drugs. They may first let them have the
drugs for free, and when the individuals become addicted, the influencers would not be the same, as
they may ignore them, not give them the drugs, would want the people to buy it themselves. It can
also be a misuse, due to mental health, education deprivation, living in deprived areas,
unemployment issues, families’ issues. This image shows the data of Bradford, Yorkshire, England. In
