CASE STUDY
Jane is 21 years old and has been diagnosed with schizophrenia which is a psychotic
disorder. Jane had a normal childhood, but gradually became withdrawn as she reached
later adolescence. Jane obtained a place on a degree in medicine at the university of her
choice but was withdrawn from the course following being referred to student health by the
Dean of the School of Medicine, when she became convinced that the people in a DVD
clip shown in class, were addressing her directly.
Jane had made friends with other students on the course but gradually stopped
communicating with them, spending all of her free time in her room, where she could be
heard shouting and telling someone to stop speaking to her. Students who looked through
her bedroom window, could see no one else in the room.
Jane’s parents were contacted by the university, who took her home and arranged a visit
with their G.P. Jane’s appearance had altered, she no longer took pride in her appearance
and her clothes were dirty, appearing not to have been changed for several days.
The G.P. contacted the local mental health team and Jane was admitted to the ward. Jane
agreed to the admission but was told that had she not, she would have been admitted under
the current mental health legislation, as she was considered to be at risk of harming herself
following an incident with a razor when Jane was shaving her legs but stabbing at her
ankles during the process.
Jane has refused medication stating that she is not ill, and her treatment is currently under
review.
Legislation, policies, and codes of practice
Assessing the needs of an individual is conducted once the disease/condition/disorder is
diagnosed, and then the professionals such as occupational therapist, psychiatrist, and
psychologist. These professionals are usually trained to work with individuals who experiences
mental illness. They would be given care holistically. Which would include their legal rights,
financial issues, right to dignity and respect/security, advocacy, medications provision for
individuals with chronic illnesses, they would require to keep examining after required time,
this this it would gather the information regarding their recovery and limitations. The role of
the professionals is to meet their needs, by first accessing for example, an individual with
heart disease, would require a physiotherapist/occupational therapist as well as cardiologist
who will be the lead professional, as through their consent the therapist should give them
exercises, as the therapist would plan the treatment after a meeting with the cardiologist and
the GP. From the agreement of these professionals, the therapist would be able to conduct
their plan. as they would know their medical structure and the needs would depend on it.
Such as an individual on wheelchair would require a certain exercise.
, When one has diagnosed the condition, this would represent the benefits of the early
interventions, such as the diagnosis of a mental illness when they have recently developed, for
example, an adult has experienced childhood trauma due to viewing his own parents’
accident, while he was growing old, he experienced lack of love from the guardians. These
aspects did not break him as much when he grew older and lacked the accessibility to
educations, which he desired, he saw people around him very rich and happy. Which made
him feel desiring thing, such deprivations led him to symptoms of being bipolar. He noticed
himself getting extremely aggressive and then suddenly felt like being isolated. He may contact
the GP, and now it is their responsibility to observe their behaviour while discussing about
their condition. Through that they would know that it is a case of mental health issue. Now
they need to refer him to the psychologist. Who would need to diagnose after ensuring that he
has all the necessary symptoms for an appropriate diagnosis. The benefit of early intervention
is that it supports to reduce any inequality such as to increase the severity of the condition.
Because it would priorly treated before it increases the condition. There are several individuals
who find it challenging to discuss their thoughts, feeling and intellectuality. So, to overcome
this issue there are many services, projects, organizations, charities, campaigns, advertising for
such individuals who are unable to express their feelings.
These factors encourage people to access the service and come to speak whenever they
experience the symptoms. It is shown that when people share their thoughts and heavy heart
it always halves the issue and support it to overcome their challenges. It is shown that there
are factors which are affecting mental health, such as employment, education, class, and race.
It is emphasised that usually every child experience mental health. Early intervention in the
case of Janes, is it shown that her diagnoses was done a bit late, because her symptoms
represent her with that she has been suffering with the condition for a longer time, as her
severity has been that she was getting the self-harming thoughts. She may feel anxious to talk
about discussing her needs, to overcome this there are campaigns such as time to talk day,
your mind matters. These would support her to gain support when expressing her thoughts,
she may also want to discuss it with people she trusts. She may feel that everyone around her
is targeting, degrading, judging, and demotivating her. Through knowing services, she would
be able to attain help, such as the professionals first need to ensure that she is comfortable
and well kept such as give her the trust, comfort relation. The NHS agreed ways to work are
that it needs to require certain skills that would benefit the service users, as individual with
mental health are also considered vulnerable, because they usually find it hard and challenging
to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings. All the professionals require them to have the
competence such as professional and personal development, this is because there is law and
legislation which updates every year, or after a certain period. For which they need to train to
be able to effectively implement it in one’s professional life for the service users. They need to
have 10 abilities, such as know how to personally development as that would reflect on their
professional growth. Communication as that would be how they would know what their
patients requires. Such as individuals with schizophrenia would require additional care support
to supervise them. Because they can show symptoms such as suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and
hallucinate. Equality, inclusions, safeguarding, person-centred support, basic life support,
handling information, and infection prevention and control. Such standards need to be fulfilled
because they show safety of the patients. This can only be implemented once the
professionals are prepared and completely train self.
Approaches to recovery is effectively done when they will empower the service users. People
with mental illness are initially experiencing traumatic situation, such as abuse, discrimination,
childhood trauma. They seek for an effective guidance, which supports them to overcome the
mindset, which one is trapped in. to prevent this they need to ensure that the patients are
