Jood en emigreert in 1885 naar Antwerpen om de antisemitische pogroms te ontvluchten
Studie:
o 1901: inschrijving aan Université libre de Bruxelles -> tijdens deze periode smeedt hij
zijn eigen concept omtrent de band tussen strafrecht en criminologie
o 1906: behaalt doctoraat rechten
Aanvankelijke loopbaan:
o Eerst ingeschreven aan de balie in Brussel
o Vervolgens aan de balie in Antwerpen
o Samen met andere collega’s richt hij de vereniging van Vlaamse juristen op & zet hij
zich in voor de de Vervlaamsing van het Gent universitair onderwijs -> bij het begin
van WOI publiceert hij “De Vervlaamsing van de Universiteit Gent”
Verdere loopbaan aan Universiteit Gent:
o 1923: Conferentie-meester
o 1934: professor -> op dat moment heeft hij reeds meerdere publicaties op zijn naam
mbt criminologie en strafrecht
o 1935-1936: secretaris van de faculteit
o 1939: decaan
Oprichting van een criminologisch onderzoeksinstituut in 1936:
o Doel: creëren van een specialisatie, ten behoeve van actoren die nauw verbonden
zijn met criminaliteitskwesties, met name:
Toekomstige magistraten
Advocaten
Hoge ambtenaren van Ministerie van Justitie
Directeurs van penitentiaire instellingen
o Methodologie:
Onderricht verschaffen dat zo multidisciplinair mogelijk is
Hoe? : hij doet beroep op universitairen van de fac Rechten, maar ook
professoren van de faculteiten geneeskunde / letterkunde / filosofie
o Resultaat:
Zijn project word geaccepteerd door fac Rechten
=> nieuwe faculteit Criminologie wordt bij Koninklijk decreet opgericht op
10 mei 1938
o Huisvesting vh Instituut
Gunzburg koopt zelf een huis en schenkt dit aan de Universiteit
Gunzburg leent zijn persoonlijke bibliotheek uit aan de Universiteit
Eerste lessen die worden gegeven: criminologie / principes van
kinderbescherming / sociale strafpreventie
Tijdens WOII: Gunzburg naar buitenland
o 1940: Gunzburg vlucht eerst naar Frankrijk
