Psychological Well-Being Introduction 1
, 📌 SUMMARY: Although DSM-V lists about 400 mental illnesses now, and
includes their symptoms and treatments and is used worldwide, this hasn’t
always been the case. For example, between 1450 and 1700, many people
though that witches were real. However, looking back now it is likely that
they had some sort of mental illness, especially as hysteria or lack of emotion
was often a sign of a person being a witch. Despite this, not all witches were
mentally ill, it was more of a case of moral panic. The talking cure is a
Freudian treatment that consists of a person recording what was in their
dreams or talking to a trained therapist to uncover trauma that had been
repressed into the unconscious. Now, the medical model is often used to find
the causes of mental illness, through linking physical abnormalities and
mental illness. The definition of mental illness is difficult to say as it is an
ambiguous term.
