Case study
Miss Khuzwayo is a Grade 3 teacher at Pro-Active Primary school. She has 50
learners in her classroom. The language of teaching and learning at this school is
English as a First Additional Language. Based on the context of the community
where the school is situated, there are different spoken languages, socioeconomic
backgrounds and cultures. High employment rate and lack of parental involvement
is one of the challenges that the school faces.
Miss Khuzwayo realised that she had one learner with epilepsy, one learner with
mathematical anxiety, another one with perceptual motor problems, six with
reading difficulties and one with hearing impairment. Miss Khuzwayo, then realised
that she was not capacitated enough to meet the needs of all her learners in the
classroom. As their teacher, she has an important responsibility of making sure
that all these learners are included and affirmed in her classroom.
