Inleiding
Tijdens de verbranding in cellen komen er ook afvalstoffen vrij. Het bloed en de lymfe zorgen
voor een afvoer van deze stoffen. Het afval wordt uiteindelijk uitgescheiden door de nieren
in de vorm van urine.
8.1 De nieren
De renes (nieren latijn) en nefros (nieren grieks) zijn 2 boonvormige organen die achter het
buikvlies liggen. De linker nier ligt iets hoger dan de rechternier. Bieden nieren zijn met de
holle kant naar elkaar toe gericht. Het centrum van de holle kant heet het nierhilum, hier
komen alle bloed-, lymfe- en zenuwvaten in contact met de nier. De glandulae suprarenales
(bijnieren) zitten boven op de nieren en zijn belangrijk bij het hormoonstelsel. De bijnieren
en de nieren zijn omgeven met perirenaal vet met daaromheen een stevige
bindweefselmantel, de fascia renalis. Het vet en het bindweefsel beschermen de nieren van
schokken buitenaf.
8.1.1 Bouw van de nier
De buitenste laag van de nier heet het nierkapsel (fibrous
capsule). Het nierweefsel zelf is in 2 gebieden te
onderscheiden: de cortex (schors) en het geribbelde gebied
de medulla (merg). De medulla wordt ook wel een
mergpiramide genoemd. De top van de mergpiramide wordt
de nierpapil genoemd, deze is richting het centrum van de
nier gericht.
Bij zo’n nierpapil monden drie tot zes mergpiramiden uit in
een holte. Dat is de calix (nierkelk). Deze nierkelken monden
op hun beurt uit in een grote centrale holte in de nier, het
pyelum (nierbekken), ook pelvis genoemd. Het pelvis
vernauwt en loopt over in de ureter (urineleider).
8.1.2 Doorbloeding van de nier
