The aim of this study is to highlight the important role that volunteerism plays in our country and to understand what drives volunteering and how the challenges volunteers face could be minimised to encourage a higher level of volunteer participation in our economy and in our communities. The qualitative study used thematic analysis and data was obtained through semi-structured interviews. Three research participants were selected via purpose sampling methods. The literature on intrinsic and extrinsic rewards as well as various models developed to explain volunteer motivations are discussed as well as the empathy-altruism hypothesis. The findings of the study concurred with previous research on volunteerism that the primary motivations of volunteers are altruistic and express the need to give back to society” Key words: Motivation, Altruism, Qualitative, Volunteer, Purposive Sampling, Thematic Analysis, Interpretive Analysis Introduction Volunteerism is defined as an ongoing activity aimed at improving the wellbeing of others (Omoto and Snyder, 1995). In South Africa volunteering contributes significantly to an under resourced social services sector where the majority of volunteers offer their services. According to the Volunteer Activities Survey by Statistics South Africa in 2014 there were 2,2 million volunteers in South Africa in 2014 compared to 1,3 million in 2010, constituting n increase of about 898 000 volunteers.
