The aim of this study is to highlight the important role that volunteerism plays in our country and to understand what drives volunteering and how the challenges volunteers face could be minimised to encourage a higher level of volunteer participation in our economy and in our communities. The qualitative study used thematic analysis and data was obtained through semi-structured interviews. Three research participants were selected via purpose sampling methods. The literature on intrinsic and extrinsic rewards as well as various models developed to explain volunteer motivations are discussed as well as the empathy-altruism hypothesis.
