D1; evaluate the influence different stakeholders exert in one organisation
I will be using secondary information, such as news articles in order to identify the influence
exerted by stakeholders on the NHS.
According to the BBC (The NHS shake up article, March 2013), the owners are overhauling
the way the NHS works as they have decided for the NHS to “reform” in order to “encourage
greater involvement from the private sector and charities”. They are aiming to achieve this
by altering the organisational structure (fig 1 on article), currently £1 of every £20 spent in
the NHS goes to a non-NHS provider, and this is likely to expand due to the reforms. This
shows that internal stakeholders have exerted influence in order to change the way the NHS
is structured.
According to the Guardian (NHS Strike- October 2014), employees are extremely unhappy
with their salary, it has reportedly fallen by up to “15 % against cost of living”. Employees
have reacted by going on strike, in expectation it would encourage the government to
increase salaries. Using a trusted source; ‘Unison, the public service union’ (Fighting for fair
pay for NHS Staff, February 2015), I have understood that there is “1% consolidated pay rise
for all staff up to point 42 from April 2015”. This in result tells me that employees have
exerted influence on the government in order increase their salaries.
A blog published in 2013 (Medical Negligence Claims) states that local communities are
unsatisfied with the level of services provided on the weekend. The statistics showed a 24%
increase in death rates for patients who had surgery on Friday – requiring subsequent
weekend care. Furthermore patients who are admitted on weekends have a 20% higher
chance of dying than on weekdays. In response to this, the NHS have released a document
(Every Day Counts.pdf, 2013) and have dedicated a specific section to ‘7 Days a Week
Service’. On page 12, all improvements to specific hospitals have been made and listed, for
e.g. “improving the patient experience” as well as “reducing delays in treatment” (page15)
which will help reduce the total number of deaths. External stakeholders such as the local
community are also able to influence the owners of the government in order to help
increase the chance of living.
To conclude, internal and external stakeholders are able to influence large businesses as
action has been taken by the NHS in the past in order to satisfy human needs and wants.
