What is the objective of preproduction approvals?
The objective of preproduction approvals is to prepare all the necessary and correct
components for garment production in a timely manner.
What is approved during the preproduction approval process?
During the preproduction approval stage, many samples are exchanged between the
sourcer and the supplier including:

1) Color lab dips- small swatches of different shades of colors that are dyed in a
laboratory setting

2) Pattern strike-offs- small pieces of printed fabrics or materials prepared in a
laboratory or sample-making setting

3) Fabric swatches representing the bulk production- samples representing true fabric
construction, weight, hand, and other properties

4) Samples of necessary buttons, shanks, other notions and so on

Upon approval, the suppliers are instructed to produce all of these components.

Approval of these components and raw material production leads to the supplier's
production of preproduction samples (PPSs). PPSs are the samples made with all
approved components by the supplier's sample department. PPSs also represent the
supplier's cutting, grading, and sewing techniques. For both the supplier and sourcer, a
PPS is the first time to see what the actual production looks like in the supplier's
production facility, using the supplier's equipment and production skills. Small changes
are still possible during the PPS approval stage, such as changing the placement of
notions or garment pattern alterations. At this stage, it is almost impossible to change

, the color or construction of the main fabric as the bulk fabric already would have been
produced. Close communication is extremely important during the preproduction stage
because each approval from the sourcer's team leads to production of the approved
materials. Once they are produced, it is extremely difficult to change without additional
cost, energy consumption, and time.

Once all components are produced and PPSs are approved, the entire garment
production takes place. Throughout the production, sourcers may want to require
necessary testing and inspections to monitor acceptable production processes and
qualities. Usually, inspecting the goods in the first 5 to 10 percent of the production is
extremely important to prevent any problems for the rest of the production run.
Experienced sourcers arrange a systematic procedure to inspect production schedules
and qualities throughout the production stage.

Finally, upon completion of production, the supplier proceeds to packing. Many of
today's retailers require suppliers and sourcers to provide products packed ready to be
sold in their retail stores. The final goods with floor-ready packing are then ready for
final audits. Sourcers should conduct final audits before shipment to ensure that the
supplier fulfilled the purchase order correctly and in a satisfactory manner.
What are the four key pieces of information that must be displayed at the point of
sale?
a) Fiber content
b) Country of origin
c) Identity of the manufacturer or another responsible party
d) Care instruction
Fiber Content
Since the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, the FTC advises that most textile
products and wearing apparel must declare fiber content in generic fiber names, with
percentages by weight of each fiber, in descending order of predominance.

The FTC has a 3 percent tolerance of fiber content for multifiber fabrics. This does not
apply to one-fiber products.

Under the 5 percent rule, any fibers making up less than 5 percent of the total weight
can be listed as "other fibers." This rule does not apply to wool or recycled wool fibers.

Dog and Cat Protection Act- In the US, the importing, exporting, manufacturing, selling,
trading, advertising, and distributing of any products made with dog or cat fur is
prohibited.

The FTC publishes extensive instructions on how to display fiber content for textile
products, so sourcers must carefully examine FTC rules and advise the best way to
communicate fiber content to the supplier.
Country of Origin
After the First World War, the US government required any products imported from
Germany to carry the words "Made in Germany" to punish German industries. A formal
