Assignment 5: Teaching young learners
This assignment includes an essay which provides information on special considerations & adaptations teachers need to make when teaching young learners. Please use as a reference and do not plagiarize.
What special considerations do you feel teachers need to make when
teaching young learners?
Use demonstrations, modeling, and role-playing. These will provide a template for the
student to refer to, thus aiding the development of self-confidence.
Remember Names- When teaching any learners for the first time, it is vital to develop
rapport with these students. The same can be said for young learners. One way to
develop rapport is to remember the names of your students.
Present new information in the context of known information. Always build upon what
students already know. This refers both to knowledge of the language and to the
themes being approached. It is always advisable to expand on the children’s vocabulary
repertoire.
Rules For the Classroom- Once you know the names of your students, generated some
rapport, and feel comfortable with the learners, you could then progress towards
classroom rules with students. This will lay the foundation for positive and appropriate
behavior in class and will reinforce what is acceptable and unacceptable in class. It is
vital that teachers make students aware of what is expected. One way to do this is by
developing classroom rules.
Provide lots of practice opportunities right after checking. Remember that only by
experimenting with the language in a relevant and purposeful way will students really
grasp the appropriate use of language systems and functions.
Reading and writing activities must always be interesting, appealing, and significant to
the children. They should encourage students to write about people, places, or activities
that are important to them so they will feel motivated to take risks with the language that
they might not take with meaningless, uninteresting or detached-from their-reality
subjects.
Promote Positive Behavior- One of the more complicated issues surrounding young
learners is classroom management and the promotion of positive behavior. It is crucial
for students to see that their positive behavior is recognized and rewarded. You could
reward students with a movie at the end of the week or with a game at the end of the
class.
How would you adapt your lessons to teach young learners in a classroom
or online environment?
Set Up Routines- It is important for any young learner class to develop routines for the
benefit of the students. It will make the delivering of lessons easier and students will feel
