Zelfdeterminatietheorie (SDT)
Een macrotheorie van menselijke motivatie waarbij het gaat om basiskwesties als:
persoonlijkheidsontwikkeling, zelfregulatie, universele psychologische behoeften, life
goals en ambities, energie en vitaliteit, onbewuste processen, de relatie van cultuur
met motivatie en de impact van de sociale omgeving op motivatie, affect, gedrag en
welzijn.
De theorie kan op veel domeinen in het leven worden toegepast vooral in sport, educatie
en gezondheidszorg.
Differentiating motivation
De zelfdeterminatietheorie was een van de eerste theorieën die onderscheid begon te
maken tussen verschillende soorten motivatie. Het idee hierachter was dat het type of de
kwaliteit van iemands motivatie belangrijker zou zijn dan de totale hoeveelheid motivatie in
het voorspellen van allerlei belangrijke uitkomsten.
Het meest centrale onderscheid dat de zelfdeterminatietheorie maakt, is het
onderscheid tussen autonome motivatie en gecontrolleerde motivatie.
o Autonome motivatie: bevat zowel intrinsieke motivatie als de soorten extrinsieke
motivatie die mensen hebben geïntegreerd in hun gevoel van eigenwaarde.
Wanneer mensen autonoom gemotiveerd zijn, ervaren zij wilskracht of een zelf-
goedkeuring van hun acties.
o Gecontrolleerde motivatie: bevat zowel externe regulatie (waarbij het gedrag een
functie is van externe omstandigheden van beloning of straf) en introjected
regulation (waarbij de regulatie van een actie gedeeltelijk is geinternaliseerd en
wordt bekrachtigd door factoren als goedkeuring, vermijden van schaamte,
voorwaardelijk gevoel van eigenwaarde en ego-betrokkenheid). Wanneer mensen
worden gecontroleerd, ervaren zij druk om te denken, zich te voelen of te gedragen
op een bepaalde manier.
Beide typen motivatie geven energie en richting aan gedrag.
