1. Inleiding
De SBAR-methode is een communicatiemethode die helpt bij het klinisch redeneren, door structuur en
prioritering aan te brengen in de communicatie tussen de gever en de ontvanger (VMSzorg, z.d.). De
SBAR-methode staat voor Situation, Background, Assessment en Recommendation (VMSzorg, z.d.).
Elk element dient een specifiek doel. Situation verwijst naar het huidige probleem. Background omvat
de (medische) voorgeschiedenis. Assessment is de beoordeling van klinische expertise en
observaties van de zorgverlener, Recommendation is dat wat de zorgverlener aanbeveelt en nodig
acht op basis van de beoordeling (VMSzorg, z.d.).
De SBAR-methode vindt zijn oorsprong in Amerka. Daar is de methode ontwikkeld voor de Marine om
in stressvolle situaties kritieke informatie te communiceren (VMSzorg, z.d.). Het Institute for
Healthcare is een non-profitorganisatie die de SBAR-methode wereldwijd heeft geïntroduceerd in de
gezondheidszorg, als communicatiemethode met als doel het verbeteren van de patiëntveiligheid en
het aantal medische fouten te verminderen (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, z.d.). Sindsdien
wordt de SBAR-methode wereldwijd veelvuldig gebruikt in de gezondheidszorg als triage methodiek.
Veel gezondheidszorgorganisaties hebben deze methode opgenomen in hun standaard
communicatieprotocol (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, z.d.).
Een onderzoek van De Meester et al (2013) heeft met een studie in de Verenigde Staten aangetoond
dat de introductie van de SBAR-methode de communicatie en samenwerking tussen
