NB!!Define the concept first when answering a question
E.g. explain the difference between population and sample. First define these concepts
and then explain the difference.
1) Name the TWO most important variables in the case study and indicate whether they are
dependent or independent variables:
Dependent Variable: Depends on something
Independent Variable: Does not depend on something
Variable
Not consistent or having a fixed pattern. Liable to change. Able to be changed or
adapted.
An element, feature, or factor that is liable to vary or change.
2) Will the investigation in the case study involve a descriptive, explanatory or
predictive study?
Descriptive (Exploratory research)
Emphasises the accurate descriptions of some aspect off society.
A researcher assesses specific characteristics of individuals, groups, situations, or
even observations.
The descriptive research is directed toward studying "what" and how many of this
“what”. Thus, it is directed toward answering questions such as, "WHAT IS THIS?”
Explanatory
Its primary goal is to understand or to explain relationships.
It uses correlations to study relationships between dimensions or characteristics of
individuals, groups, situations or events.
Explanatory research explains (HOW THE PARTS OF A PHENOMENON ARE
RELATED TO EACH OTHER).
Explanatory research asks the "WHY" question.
Predictive
Moves beyond explanation to the prediction of precise relationships between dimensions or
characteristics of a phenomenon or differences
3) Using your own words, formulate one research hypothesis for the case study.
Hypothesis: An informed speculation, which is set up to be tested, about the possible
relationship between two or more variables. It is a specific type of research question.
Research hypothesis: Is the statement created by researchers when they speculate upon the
outcome of a research of experiment.
Null Hypothesis: (in a statistical test) the hypothesis that there is no significant difference
between specified populations, any observed difference being due to sampling or experimental
error.
