According to the UK government, poverty can be measured in several
ways; this could be a factor on
Finances
Living conditions
Addictions to drugs and alcohol
Poverty has been defined by the UK government as the inability of an
individual or family to meet the bare necessities of life. This includes
needs such as food. The minimal Income Standard, which is estimated
based on what the public believes is necessary for having or living a
good life, establishes the bare minimum standard of living. The
definition of poverty is known as absolute poverty which is a
condition where an individual lacks sufficient resources in keeping
the body and soul together. According to Boycewire (2022), “they are
unable to obtain basic necessities such as shelter, food, water and
warmth.” This suggests that absolute poverty is when an individual is
totally unable to live in a stable environment or household without
basic nutrition and hygiene to prevent malnutrition and clothing
needed for health living. The level of poverty is unbearable, even if a
country is gradually becoming stable with economical growth, this is
because the basic needs of an individual or family’s ability to survive
and cope in a society are unachievable as this level of poverty
depends on the economic position of the country.
, Another definition of poverty is relative poverty, which occurs when a
person or households receives below 60% per cent of the UK median
income. This concept recognises that living standards in the UK are
continually changing, and so the minimal standard of living must
evolve as well. Relative poverty can be permanent, this means that
certain families have absolutely no chance of enjoyment on same
standards of living as others in the same society, this is usually due to
the exclusion from things such as the decent housing, clothes,
internet, and all things necessary in maintaining a decent job. This
type of poverty changes frequently with the economic growth of a
country. This usually due to extensions from things such as the clean
clothing, internet, and decent living standards of housing with all the
things that are necessary to achieve and hold down a decent job.

Both definitions are significant because they help us comprehend the
scope of poverty and its consequences. Relative poverty depicts
poverty more accurately within a certain civilization by taking into
consideration the standard of living of a given group. It also aids in
the identification of social inequality by showing discrepancies in
wealth and income between different groups of individuals. Because it
is based on a minimum quality of living essential for survival,
absolute poverty provides a universal definition of poverty that can be
used across diverse nations and communities.
