▫ The History of the National Health Service – Unit 6
What led to the NHS to be created?
By the end of World War II, the concept of an integrated, state funded hospital
service, the NHS, was established on the 5th of July,1948. When Labour came
into power in 1945. The Minister of Health, Aneurin Bevan was given the task
of introducing the service. They made a bold and pioneering plan to make
healthcare no longer exclusive to those who could not afford it but to make it
accessible to everyone. The National Health Service, abbreviated to NHS was
launched by the then Minister of Health in Atlee's post–war government,
Aneurin Bevan, at the park hospital in Manchester.
