The Three main organs of the government are:
● The Legislature - Makes laws
● The Executive - Enforces laws
● The Judiciary- Interprets the laws and safeguards the
constitution

LEGISLATURE:
● Legislatures are the law-making bodies.
● The center of the law making body is called Parliament.
● In states, they are called Vidhan Sabha or Legislative Assembly.
● Few states have a bicameral legislature consisting of the
Vidhan Sabha(Legislative Assembly) and the Vidhan Parishad
(Legislative Council).
● There is a clear division of responsibilities between central and
state governments as it is nearly impossible for the central
government to look after a country as big as India.
● The division of responsibilities between the Central and the
State government is provided by the constitution which are
○ Union List: Only the Union legislature has the power to
make laws on this list. Examples are foreign affairs,
defense, and finance. All the matters related to national
importance come under this category.
○ State List: Matters which are important for the state such
as state administration, public health, law and order, etc.
Are taken care of by the State Legislature.
○ Concurrent List: Matters that are important to both
Central and State. For example, Forests, education, trade
unions, etc.

Union Legislature is divided into two Sabhas which are
● Lok Sabha (Lower house) or House of the People
● Rajya Sabha (Upper house) or Council of States.
