Hoofstuk 16 - ‘n Skim uit die verlede


Twee weke loop verby voordat Greg enigiets van
Xander af hoor. ‘n Donderdag na al sy klasse sien
Greg vir ‘n man oppad na sy woonstel. Dis Tom, die
terreinbestuurder by Lawson Kollege wat vir Eckardt
met sy sosiale-ingenieurswese gehelp het. Hy
beduie dat Greg hom moet volg.


Greg volg vir Tom tot binne die wit NG Moederkerk wat ‘n landmerk in Stellenbosch is. Die gebou
is indrukwekkend met glasventers en rooi matte. Tom vertel Greg dat mense onder die kerk
begrawe is. Dis meestal predikante en Afrikaanse voorvaders. Dit maak die vloer kouer voel en
Greg raak ongemaklik. Xander het vir Tom gestuur. Hy skuil en kuberkraak nog. Greg sê dat hy
Xander se hulp soek om die Baker te vang. Tom sê dat Xander klaar is met Greg se familie en hy
soek nie geld nie. Hy het met Bitcoin ryk geword. Greg hou aan karring en sê hy sal vir Xander
vergewe vir alles wat hy aan Greg se gesin gedoen het as hy hom sal help. Tom dink hy praat
twak en loop uit.


Chapter 16 - A crook from the past


Two weeks pass before Greg hears anything from Xander again. A Thursday after his classes,
Greg sees a man on his way to the flat. It’s Tom, the building manager at Lawson College who
helped Ecakrdt with his social engineering. He gestures for Greg to follow him.


Greg follows Tom inside the white NG Motherchurch which is a landmark in Stellenbosch. The
building is impressive with stained glass windows and red carpets. Tom tells Greg that people
are buried beneath the church. It’s mostly preachers and Afrikaans forefathers. It makes the
floors feel colder and Greg becomes uncomfortable. Xander sent Tom. He is in hiding and still
hacks. Greg says he wants Xander’s help to catch the Baker. Tom says that Xander is done with
Greg’s family and isn’t interested in money. He became rich with Bitcoin. Greg continues nagging
and says that he will forgive Xander for what he did to Greg’s family if he helps him. Tom says
Greg is talking nonsense and walks out.

Hoofstuk 17 - ‘n Rivier van dooie water


Dit voel vir Greg asof hy iets verloor het en hy haat
verloor. Hy bestel vir hom kos deur Uber Eats en probeer
nog van die notaboekie uit te pluis. Hy sien nog vae
woorde en die naam Brodie. Hy ontvang sy kos en sit
om te eet toe die deur oopbars. Greg skrik, maar sien
dis Lisa en Plank. Hulle lag vir Greg wat geskrik het.
Greg is so verlig hy is nie eens kwaad wanneer hulle van
sy kos begin eet nie. Chloe loop verby en sê daar is
hoop dat Greg mense by hom het. Sy kom eet saam.
Lisa neem aan dat Greg nog kuberkraak en hy vertel
hulle dat hy die Baker probeer vang. Chloe vra of hy
toegang tot die universiteit se sekuriteitskameras kan kry sodat sy ‘n kunsprojek daarmee kan
maak. Hy stem nie in nie.


Die volgende oggend oppad klas toe sien Greg ‘n klomp mense by die houtbrug staan en staar.
Daar is ‘n lyk in die rivier. Dis Tom.


Chapter 17 - A river of dead water


To Greg, it feels like he lost something and he hates losing. He orders food through Uber Eats
and tries to figure out more from the notebook. He sees more faded words and the name Brodie.
He receives his food and sits down to eat when his door bursts open. Greg gets a fright but sees
that it’s Lisa and Plank. He’s so relieved that he isn’t even mad when they start eating some of
his food. Chloe walks past and says that there’s hope now that there are people in Greg’s flat.
She joins them. Lisa assumes that Greg still hacks and he tells them that he is looking for the
Baker. Chloe asks if he can access the university’s security cameras for an art project. He
doesn’t agree to do it.


The following morning, Greg sees a group of people staring out over the wooden bridge. There is
a body in the river. It’s Tom.
