georiënteerd zijn afgescheiden door cellen aan de buitenste mantelrand (= echte
schelp)
hypostracum: binnenste parelmoerlaag: bestaande uit evenwijdig aan de lichaamsas
georiënteerde kalkkristallen, afgescheiden door de ganse oppervlakte van de mantel
o manthelholte dankzei schelp beschermt maar toch nog steeds in contact met de
buitenwereld
Voortbeweging
gespierde voet, cilia en mucus belangrijk
o voet = ventrale uitgroeing van de romp, dicht achter kop
o kan vingervormig zijn of hele buikzijde in beslag nemen
o sterk omgevormd bij de Cephalopoda: randen groeien uit tot
vangarmen rond de mond
o gebruikt om te kruipen, graven, zwemmen
Als embryo en larve bewegen de dieren maar in het volwassen stadium kunnen ze
sessiel (= niet zelfstandig kunnen voortbewegen) worden
Voortplanting
meestal tweehuizig (hermafrodiet), soms eenhuizig (gescheiden gelsacht)
o Ookal zijn de hermafrodiet, ze gaan meestal nog wel paren met een ander organisme,
zelfbevruchting komt niet vaak voor
copulatie (zaadcellen worden van een dier bij een ander ingebracht) en externe bevruchting
komen allebei voor
