Hoe evolueerde de handel in de tweede middeleeuwen?

Aan het begin van de 11de eeuw trokken handelaars opnieuw van stad tot stad.
Voornamelijk in Noordwest-Europa en in Noord-Italië kenden de handel en de steden
een belangrijke groei. Deze twee gebieden werden verbonden door de jaarmarkten van
de Champagne. Oosterse luxeproducten werden aangevoerd via het Middellandse
Zeegebied naar Europa.

In de 14de eeuw kwam de Euraziatische handel in een crisis terecht. Oorzaken:

● pest;
● hongersnood;
● oorlogsvoering --> Ottomaanse rijk bedreigde aanvoer van oosterse producten.


Hoe evolueerde het sociale domein in de tweede middeleeuwen?

In de middeleeuwen bepaalde geboorte je plaats in de gelaagde samenleving. De
samenleving was ingedeeld in drie standen:

● clerus;
● adel;
● derde stand: grootste deel boeren en horige boeren.

Vanaf de 11de eeuw wijzigden de sociale verhoudingen:

● horigheid verdween;
● opkomst van de steden:
○ patriciërs (= elite)
○ ambachten
○ dagloners
○ armen
Hoe evolueerde het culturele domein in de tweede middeleeuwen?

De christelijke Kerk domineerde het culturele en het intellectuele leven. Het geloof en de
Kerk vormden de basis van alle kennis.
In de late middeleeuwen kwam er meer en meer kritiek op de wantoestanden in de
Kerk:

● Westers Schisma: rivaliserende pausen;
● andere wantoestanden.

De interne en externe kritiek tastten de dominante rol van de Kerk aan.
