,All ATSU-SOMA students are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to participate in clinical
rotations unless the University leadership has officially granted an exemption. ATSU-SOMA will
continue to follow the CDC guidelines throughout the academic year.
Course Description
The OB/GYN clerkship is a 4-week Core experience. These experiences may include in person patient
encounters, Telehealth remote patient encounters, or online didactic experiences. This clerkship is
designed to teach the student a basic understanding of obstetrics and gynecology through the integration
of didactic knowledge and clinical experiences. Students may receive exposure to a diverse community of
patients in ambulatory, inpatient settings, or remote or Telehealth encounters. In addition to in person or
virtual patient care encounters, the completion of a variety of learning assignments are required during
the clerkship. These assignments reflect the unique practice of an osteopathic obstetrician/gynecologist
using clinical experiences as well as didactics/reading. Students will be exposed to the primary care
screening protocols as well as diagnosis and management of various abnormalities involving women’s
care.
Throughout the clerkship, osteopathic medical students should approach the care of the patient
through a whole person perspective. With this multidimensional approach, the patient’s physical
complaints are considered in the context of their mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing as well as
contributing factors that include their family circle, community, environment, and social determinants
of health. Students should always function in a professional manner, as a member of the
interprofessional healthcare team, and continually strive to provide optimum quality patient care and
services in a complex system.
Course Prerequisites
Completion of year OMS I and OMS II at ATSU – SOMA.
Course Goals/Outcomes
The goal of the course is to gain a comprehensive understanding of Osteopathic OB/GYN while meeting
the listed competencies of the rotation. The OB/GYN curriculum will provide the students with the
knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become competent in the diagnosis and management of a
wide variety of medical concerns involving women.
Students should participate in clinical/patient encounters. At a MINIMUM, students will be expected to
describe common outpatient and inpatient obstetrical procedures with their indications and possible
complications with consideration of value-based care and patient safety including ultrasound,
amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling, induction and augmentation of labor, spontaneous vaginal
delivery, vaginal birth after cesarean delivery, operative vaginal delivery, breech delivery and external
cephalic version, cesarean delivery, postpartum tubal ligation, cerclage, newborn circumcision.
Students should participate in all available clinical/patient encounters the clerkship provides and is
allowed by the preceptor. At a MINIMUM, students will be expected to describe common outpatient and
inpatient Gynecologic procedures with their indications and possible complications including ultrasound,
cervical cytology evaluation, colposcopy, cervical biopsy, excisional procedures of the cervix, vulvar
biopsy, endometrial biopsy, long active reversible contraception insertion and removal, dilation and
curettage, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, tubal ligation, hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy,
management of ectopic pregnancy, and pregnancy termination.
,Course Objectives/Competencies
The ATSU-SOMA curriculum is aligned with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Seven
Osteopathic Core Competencies for Medical Students. Under each of these competency domains, there are
measurable curricular goals, which, upon student attainment and completion spanning the 4 years of
medical school, indicate competence in the domain. These curricular goals broadly shape and define the
courses and clerkships within the 4-year ATSU-SOMA curriculum. For each curricular goal, there are
accompanying learning activities, whose purpose is to help students achieve the goal and learn course
content. Each learning activity is guided by a set of specific, measurable learning objectives that state
what the student is expected to accomplish during the activity.
The objectives are intended to be a guide for the student’s learning activities and serve as a baseline for
assessment of the student’s enhanced knowledge, skills, and professional behavior. While each student is
expected to further expand his/her knowledge base and to care for all assigned patient cases, he/she is
also expected to avail him/herself of the ATSU-SOMA educational materials provided. Each objective
maps to the corresponding evaluation categories and competencies on the course Clinical Rotation
Evaluation (CRE) and coursework assignments.
Students will refer to individual schemes and review the associated learning objectives and learning
activities associated with each. These are under a separate tab on Canvas.

* This includes cis women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and those who are
otherwise marginalized that may seek care from an OB/GYN provider.
, There are 4 addendums included with this syllabus to describe the AOA competencies*, the
ATSU-SOMA Curricular Goals**, the University Core Professional Attributes*** and the AAMC
Entrustable Professional Activities****.
The AOA competencies, ATSU-SOMA Curricular Goals and University Core Professional Attributes
most relevant to this course are:
Medical Knowledge (MK)
Graduates must demonstrate knowledge and application of osteopathic, biomedical, clinical,
epidemiological, biomechanical, social, and behavioral sciences in the context of patient-centered
care.
• Recognize and explain normal structure and function across the lifespan.
• Identify and explain the molecular, biochemical, and cellular mechanisms that support normal
structure and function.
• Distinguish between the mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, describe their impact on the
body, and relate them to patient signs and symptoms.
• Explain and apply principles of contemporary therapeutics, including osteopathic, surgical,
pharmacologic, molecular, biologic, behavioral and contemporary/alternative.
• Interpret diagnostic studies and correlate abnormal findings to disease states.
• Describe the epidemiology of common disease states within a defined population, and the
systematic approaches useful in reducing the incidence and prevalence of those disease states.
Alignment with ATSU-SOMA Core Professional Attributes (CPAs)
ATSU-SOMA's core professional attributes (CPAs) help define the distinctiveness of ATSU-SOMA
graduates who will be providing care and managing and leading healthcare teams and organizations.
CPAs address many of the skills deemed critical for healthcare professionals. The ATSU-SOMA CPAs are
critical thinking, cultural proficiency, inter-professional collaboration, interpersonal skills, and social
responsibility. The clerkship’s competencies align with the ATSU-SOMA CPAs in the following way:
