- Cultuur: mogelijkheden, noties en vormen van gedrag die personen hebben
verworven als leden van de een maatschappij/samenleving (Geertz en Tylor).
- Etnocentrisme: een cultuur beoordelen vanuit je eigen cultuur
- Victoriaanse Antropologie: evolutionisme
- Antropologie: Kennis over mensen; connecties binnen samenlevingen en tussen
samenlevingen begrijpen en beschrijven.
- Probleem van antropologie volgens Carrithers: de diversiteit van het
menselijke sociale leven.
H2:
- Going native: het gevaar voor onderzoekers om te betrokken te raken in de
gemeenschap die hij onderzoekt; hij kan zijn objectiviteit en afstand verliezen.
- ‘shift from function to meaning’: antropologie moet zichzelf vormen als een
humanitaire discipline ipv als een ‘natural science’.
- Hermeneutiek: interpretatieve methode (geertz was voorstander hiervan)
- Gemeinschaft(community) en Gesellschaft(society): begrippen van Tönnies;
om sociale banden te kategoriseren in twee dichotome sociologische typen die
elkaar definiëren.
- ‘Ancient law’: begrip van Maine; onderscheid tussen status- en contract
samenlevingen. (later: traditioneel-modern)
- ‘Ancient Society’: begrip van Morgan; 7 niveaus van barbaars-geciviliseerd.
- Cultureel relativisme: begrip van Boas; elke cultuur moet in haar eigen termen
begrepen worden en het is wetenschappelijk misleidend om andere culturen
volgens westerse, etnografische termen te beoordelen (‘een is beter dan andere’)
- Historisch particularisme: Boas; alle culturen hebben hun eigen ‘unieke’
geschiedenis en dit kan niet teruggedrongen worden tot slechts één categorie in
een universalistisch schema van ontwikkeling. Daarom mozaïek perspectief.
