Week 1


➔ Compute variable with difference of 2 variables:
◆ Transform—compute variable–name the new variable—select variable 1-variable
2 in the numeric expression box


➔ Compute variable with rounded numbers:
◆ Transform—compute variable–name the new variable—choose RND(1) in the
function group—replace (?) with the target variable


➔ Create a frequency table:
◆ Analyze–descriptive statistics—frequencies
◆ Click statistics—choose what statistics you want (mean, s.d., variance, range
etc.)—continue
◆ charts—histogram


➔ Recode a variable:
◆ Transform–recode into different variables –select the variable—name the output
variable—click change– click old and new value
● Indicate the old value— give the new value—click add
● Click system or user missing—give the new value (the same value to keep
it as a missing value)—click add
● Click all other values—give new value—click add
● If we do step 3 without doing step 2, then we will accidentally group the
missing values together with the others!!
◆ Go to variable view—input missing values
◆ go to “values”— give labels to the values

◆ Double click to open chart editor—double click on the bars—click
binning—custom—choose interval width (i.g. 5)—apply

list—click plots—can choose stem-and-leaf or histogram—continue—ok


➔ Independent samples t-test:
◆ Analyze–compare means—independent samples t-test—choose grouping
variable (based on the groups we will compare)—define groups—add test
variables–ok
◆ Look at the t value and the associated significance (NOT Levene’s test)!!!!


➔ Paired samples t-test:
◆ Analyze–compare means—paired samples t-test—choose variable 1 and variable
2 (in pair 1)—ok
◆ Gives us the mean difference, t value, sig. level and confidence interval of
differences
