Unit 1 – Investigating Travel and
Tourism
D2 – Analyse how travel and tourism organisations are responding to changing
trends and factors
In this assignment I will be analysing how travel and tourism organisations are
responding to changing trends and factors. I will be looking at how the respond to
terrorism, environmental issues and the trend greater opportunity for adventure and
alternative destinations.
Travel and tourism organisation have to respond to terror attacks. It is mainly airlines
and airports who have to be prepared in case this happens and they also have to prevent
it from happening. Airlines respond to this factor by ensuring that they take extra safety
precautions by applying travel restrictions. . In August 2006 there was a terrorist plot
known as the Transatlantic Bomb Plot which was to blow up an aircraft travelling from
London. The bombs were so ingenious that they would have evaded airport security.
Because of this strict hand baggage rules were put into place as to how much and what
liquids travellers could have in their hang luggage. After the attacks in Paris 2015 which
left 129 people dead. This article
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/16/david-cameron-to-boost-security-
spending-after-paris-attacks said that David Cameron hired additional aviation security
officers to assess security at overseas airports in the wake of concerns raised about
many Middle East and North Africa airports used by British tourists. The airlines also
respond to terror attacks by stopping the routes to the destinations in which terrorist
activity has occurred. The airline and tour operator Thomas Cook have cancelled all
flights to Tunisia after 38 innocent holiday makers were massacred whilst relaxing on
the beach by the Islamic State (ISIS). On the 18th of November Thomas Cook released
that they have taken the decision to cancel all booking to Tunisia until the 30 th of April.
Thompson and First choice have also made the same decision to cancel flights and
holidays until March 22nd. Thomas Cook have said customers who have already booked a
holiday to Tunisia can cancel or amend their holiday free of charge.
Travel and tourism organisations also have to respond to more independent travellers.
Travel agents especially will respond to this by persuading customers to book with them
because they provide extra security. They also respond to this by having strong working
relationships with travel suppliers and the latest in computer reservations technology
enable travel agents to access the most up-to-date information on how to get you the
best value. Tradedoubler’s most recent research found that the majority of people use
price-focused channels for travel and hospitality purposes: 59 per cent to book holidays;
57 per cent to book hotels and 53 per cent to book flights. Travel agents ensure that they
communicate messages of value to price-sensitive consumers throughout their sales and
marketing strategies. Travel agents also respond to this by providing expertise
information when it comes to complicated itineraries. When there is a high value to a
holiday people prefer visiting specialist agents. The tour operator Thomas Cook are
