Unit 3 – The UK as a Destination
P4 – Explain how internal and external factors affect UK inbound and domestic
tourism
M2 – Analyse how three factors are currently affecting UK inbound and domestic
tourism

In this assignment I will be explaining how internal and external factors affect UK
inbound and domestic tourism. I will use statistics and other relevant sources. Included
in this assignment I will also be analysing how three factors are currently affecting UK
inbound and domestic tourism.

Internal and External Factors
An internal factor effecting the UK is something within the UK itself. An external factor
effecting the UK is what is happening outside of the UK. The UK are most likely to have
more control over the internal factors.

Health, Safety and Security within the UK
Health, safety and security will affect UK inbound and domestic tourism and will
determine whether tourists want to visit the UK. When visiting the UK tourists will want
to feel safe and secure. Terror attacks will make people want to change their trips and
also put people off the destination. In 2015 in Tunisia 38 innocent holiday makers got
gunned down whilst relaxing on a beach. Because of this breach of safety and security it
has caused the numbers of tourists to decline for this area. In September 2015 the
amount of tourists in Tunisia dropped from 5 million to 4 million. When the attack
happened 3,500 British Tourists shortened their stay left Tunisia immediately. This has
had a massive impact for this country. If this type of activity happened in the UK then we
would expect the same thing to happen. Visitor numbers would drop and so would the
volume and value of inbound and domestic tourist. (Visitor Volume is how many
visitors, Visitor Value is how much the visitors are worth). If an attack happened here in
the UK it would also make the tourists think twice about visiting again. If a set of
inbound tourists visited the UK twice a year, a terror attack would cause the frequency
of visit to decrease.
This factor is currently affecting UK inbound and domestic tourism. With the threat of
Islamic State in recent news, they have tried to scare the UK by saying that there will be
attacks. Over the Christmas period domestic tourists have been scared to visit large
cities such as London to do Christmas shopping. This is because of terror threat.
Inbound tourists might also be afraid to use aircraft as well. 2 years ago there was an
attack on a Kenyan Shopping Centre. This article
http://www.sabc.co.za/news/a/904a75804139fc6fad5eaf3895839b19/Mall-attack-to-
have-negative-impact-on-Kenya-retail says ‘’ the country’s retail and tourism sectors will
be the hardest hit by the latest terrorism attacks.’’

It is important for the UK to have tourists as tourism generates money into the economy.
‘’ALVA (Association of Leading Visitor Attractions) Director Bernard Donoghue has been
interviewed extensively over the last few days on the tourism impacts on London of the
terrorist attacks in Paris. He has reported that ALVA members have seen cancellations
and that whilst all have reviewed their security procedures and some have increased the
visible security presence at front of house, for all it is 'business as usual' ‘’. Hopefully this
statement will persuade visitors to visit places in the UK and hopefully they won’t be put
off. If other things happen which may jeopardise people’s health, safety and security
then the UK should expect to see a decline in tourism.

Travel Restrictions
Some countries have travel restrictions or bans as to where people are allowed to travel.
This will have a large impact on inbound visitors. Since the 9/11 terror attacks the UK
have become stricter. Some residents of some countries must have a Visa to enter the
UK. Visas do cost money and they have to be applied for, they can’t just give you one
straight away. Residents from countries such as Zambia, Syria and Iraq must have a Visa
to enter the UK. They are only able to stay in the UK for 3 months. Other travel
restrictions such as security related restrictions will also have an impact on inbound
tourists. In August 2006 there was a terrorist plot known as the Transatlantic Bomb Plot
which was to blow up an aircraft travelling from London. The bombs were so ingenious
that they would have evaded airport security. Because of this strict hand baggage rules
were put into place as to how much and what liquids travellers could have in their hang
luggage.

Exchange Rates
Exchange rates will have an impact on how many visitors visit the UK. When the
economy is doing well and isn’t in a recession the pound sterling is strong. However
when the pound is strong, it deters visitors from overseas. This is because when they
exchange their own money for sterling they will get fewer pounds. At the moment the
UK are not in a period of recession therefore this will happen. This could result in
tourists going elsewhere where there is a better rate of exchange. The UK is seen as a
quite expensive country.
On the 05/01/2016 here are some exchange rates for different countries.
1 British Pound = 1.47 US Dollar $
1 British Pound = 1.37 Euro
1 British Pound = 97.78 Indian Rupee
1 US Dollar $ = 0.93 Euros
The exchange rate from Euros to dollars is good. Because it is low people from Europe
may choose to visit the USA instead. This could have an impact on the volume and value
of tourists in the UK.
