INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the module: Criminal Justice Research Methodology (SEP3707). This
module is presented by the Department of Criminology and Security Science
(Programme: Security Management), School of Criminal Justice, College of Law at
Unisa.
Please make a point of studying this introduction carefully, so that you clearly
understand the information that will be provided in this module. This study guide is
written primarily for students enrolled for the Advanced Diploma in Security
Management.
This specific module, Criminal Justice Research Methodology (SEP3707), is directed
to preparing security management students for the research they will have to
undertake when they proceed to the higher qualifications in security management:
the Postgraduate Diploma in Security Management and the MTech in Security
Management (MTSEC).
Our aim in this module is therefore to provide students with an understanding of
research methodology in the discipline of Applied Criminal Justice. The main focus is
on familiarising students with the different methods and techniques applied in
research, and the different approaches that are specifically used in the study field of
Applied Criminal Justice. The emphasis in this module is on the practical
implementation of fieldwork research – in other words, ‘How to do research’.
This module will equip you with the detailed knowledge you need to enable you to:
understand the research process and the different research methods used (i.e.
research instruments, sampling methods, interviewing techniques) to collect
research information; analyse and interpret the collected data/information; and plan a
research project (via a research proposal) in Applied Criminal Justice.
Please note that this module is set at NQF level 7 for 12 credits in the field of
research methodology.
The contents are structured to help and encourage those with diplomas to continue
their studies in the field of research methodology. This module will therefore give
these students the opportunity to develop skills and acquire the knowledge that they
require in order to carry out future research studies.
In developing this module, we used as our foundation outcomes-based assessment
in higher education and open and distance learning. This means that we have made
a point of giving you the opportunity to engage in critical thinking; this involves you
reflecting on your own views. You must therefore make a concerted effort to
complete each activity and reflect on your own viewpoint. This will enable you to
assess whether you have developed the necessary research skills to be able to
undertake and scientifically implement such research studies in future qualifications.
Before you start, please read the following assessment plan for the module carefully.
There are no prescribed books for this module. However, there are recommended e-
reserve references that will help you to read up in more detail on various issues and
aspects of doing research in the field. You should feel free to read and use these

resources. Please note also that the myUnisa website is essential for completing this
module. You need to visit this site for SEP3707 frequently – try to come online at
least once a week. You need to participate in the various interactive discussions,
blog and FAQs in order to get the necessary feedback from the lecturer/s on topics
such as online activities, assignments and discussion forums. Do not leave all this
until the last minute, just before the examinations!
We will use an electronic study guide to lead you through the various study units that
make up this module. This study guide can be downloaded using the ‘learning units’
tool on myUnisa.
Other myUnisa tools that we will use during the facilitation of this module are:
Announcements: Your lecturer will use this tool every so often to bring important
matters to your attention.
Schedule: Please consult the Schedule about important dates and events such as
examination dates and assignment submission dates. This will help you to draw up
your own study plan and manage your deadlines.
Official study material: You can access all the official study material (e.g. tutorial
letters) from here.
Additional resources: You can access additional material from here.
Discussion forums: We use discussions to share and explore important issues
relating to research methodology. Please note such forums, including student blogs
and chatrooms, are designed to facilitate interactive discussions, learning and
academic matters and study activities. These forums are NOT to be used (exploited)
in order to make personal or derogatory attacks on the lecturer or other students. If
there is something about the course that you are not happy with, there are other
avenues available to you to raise any concerns you may have. If you make
slanderous or defamatory remarks on any of these forums, you may well find
yourself facing a charge of libel or crimen injuria.
Assignments: Here you can submit your assignments and monitor your results.
Your lecturer and the team in the Department of Criminology and Security Science at
Unisa wish you all the best as you seek to complete this module successfully.
Importance of the module
If you have decided to do this module, you are probably planning either to do
research in the field of criminal justice or to continue with your studies for a higher
qualification in research. Many practitioners and students who have undertaken
research projects in the field have found that they needed a foundational,
introductory and practical course in research methodology – and this is precisely
what this module aims to be.
The purpose of this module is therefore to enable you to carry out all the activities
that you will have to do in order to complete a research project in the field of criminal

justice. We have designed the course to be practical and user-friendly, and to
explain complex theoretical concepts in a way that is easy to understand. To achieve
this, we used straightforward terminology and many practical examples drawn
directly from field experience. Security management students will also find this
module invaluable in enabling them to carry out their research work.
The benefits of this module
If you are a practitioner in the field of criminal justice, or are planning to become one,
you will also be able to apply the skills you learn in this module to your daily work. If
you are undertaking research for the first time, this module will be especially
valuable, because it will help you to plan, start and implement your research
systematically.
The module covers the following aspects of research:
How to plan your research
Where to start
How to undertake a literature review
How to write a research proposal
Choosing the research methodology
Collecting information
Analysing and interpreting collected information
What do you need before you can start studying this module?
By the time you start this module, you might or might not have already undertaken
some basic research as part of your studies. For example, you might have done
further or additional reading and used these sources to write an essay assignment;
or you might have drawn on your own or other people’s experiences in the field. If
this is the case, many of the skills and principles covered by this module will not be
entirely new to you. If you are working in the field, you will find that you can draw on
this existing knowledge and experience as you complete the activities in this module.
To participate meaningfully in this module, you will also need an enquiring mind and
good interpersonal and analytical skills. You should also be able to write well. If you
need to improve your writing skills, you might want to consult some additional
resources about writing; most libraries have books or manuals on the topic. If English
is your second or third language, try to make frequent use of any good English
dictionaries. In addition, get into the habit of making frequent use of the
‘THESAURUS’ function on your computer.
