9702 A2 Physics Circular Motion

Important definition (mostly asked in exam):
Radian: angle subtended at the centre of the circle, where its arc length is equals to its radius
Angular velocity: rate of change of angular displacement swept out from radius
Angular speed: rate of change of angle of the (obj) eg. String
Gravitational field: a region of space where a mass experience a gravitational force
Formula:
Angular displacement, s = rθ
Angular velocity, w = 2𝜋 / T ; T, time taken
Centripetal acceleration, a = v^2 / r
Centripetal force, Fc = mrw^2 or mv^2 /r
Concept must know:

Note: For vertical circle, radius is not constant, radius at bottom will be longer than radius at the top due to weight
oppose the centripetal force

Note: as R is not horizontally toward the centre so must resolve R first
Common Question:
Q: Answer angular velocity in term of number of revolution per minute (RPM).
Ans: (Ans in term of radian per second) * 𝜋
Explanation: 1 rev = 2𝜋 & 1 min = 60 second
Q: Suggest and explain whether the mud near the edge of the plate or near the centre will leave the plate first as
angular speed increase.
Ans: Mud that near the edge of the plate as it is further away from centre. Greater radius require a greater
centripetal force to maintain its circular path.
