Syllabus Type:
Multi-syllabus
Course Aims:
By the end of the course, the student will be better able to…
Develop his listening and speaking skills and pronunciation so he will be more confident
when speaking in order to benefit him in his workplace/ socializing with friends. Touch on
his grammar as well as his reading and writing skills.
, Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
Syllabus type:
I have chosen multi-syllabus because there are a lot of areas my student wants to cover
and having this syllabus type will help with that.
Why I have chosen the topics covered and the target language/skill:
In the first hour, I have chosen the topic of environmental issues . This is the because the
environment is one of my students’ topics of interest. I have chosen to use the skills,
speaking and listening because my student has a problem with his pronunciation, and I
feel speaking about environmental issues will enhance his ability to pronounce difficult
yet common words. In this lesson, there is plenty of room for speaking which I feel is
essential for him. It starts with them having a conversation about themselves to get to
know each other and to break the ice. It allows them to be comfortable around each
other. A video is also included to help with his listening skills. As mentioned before, there
is plenty of opportunity to speak. Homework is also provided where he should watch and
listen to more videos and tell the teacher what other information he has found. I feel this
lesson is appropriate for a first lesson because it’s not overwhelming and is very
conversational.
In the second hour, I have chosen the topic Technology. This is, again, because it is one of
the students’ topics of interest. I have chosen the skills, reading and writing. The student
feels confident in his ability to write, and I wanted to include it, not only to have a well-
balanced lesson plan, but for him to do something that he feels confident about so that
he does not get discouraged if he finds the other lessons challenging. During this lesson,
the student reads an article. The article is very impressive as it has a glossary at the
bottom of the page if the student has trouble with words. Students goes through the
vocabulary with the teacher. Student should then read the text and listen for gist. He will
then write a summary to sum up what he understands so far. Student then read the text
again and completes comprehensive questions. He will also be required to utilize the
article to design an advertisement for the product mentioned in article and present it to
the teacher as a salesperson. Homework is provided and he will be required to write a
summary of the article he received.
In hour three, the topic is based on science because it interests the student. In this lesson,
pronunciation is covered because the student wants to improve on it. He has trouble
pronouncing certain words and I feel it must be covered. During the warmer, teacher and
student will discuss the funniest dreams they have had, I wanted to add this because the
student loves humour and I wanted to incorporate that in the lesson. Student will read
another article and learn how to pronounce the words in bold which is at the bottom of
the article with their definitions and use them to form his own sentences. He should then
write a creative essay based on dreams. He will reflect on the lesson by writing and
recording his dreams. He will also be required to bring a newspaper the next day for the
next lesson.
In hour four, the topic is about current affairs because it interests my students but leads
