Betekenis geven aan symptomen.
Of mensen nou ziek zijn of gezond, ze
houden hun fysieke status bij. Hiervoor
zijn er sowieso 8 manieren om informatie
van het lichaam te krijgen (zie figuur).
Het lichaam geeft een constante stroom
van informatie, maar de meeste
informatie hiervan blijft buiten het
bewustzijn van het persoon.
Wanneer mensen zich bewust worden
van fysiologische processen door de sensaties (attention), dan wordt deze informatie over het
lichaam geïnterpreteerd (interpretation). Deze interpretatie leidt vervolgens tot bepaalde
psychologische ervaringen zoals emoties (psych. experience) en tot gedrag (behavior).
Hierin zijn het voornamelijk veranderingen in het lichaam welke in ons bewustzijn liggen en onze
aandacht trekken. Over deze veranderingen van normaal oordelen wij via een baseline met
afwijkende dingen van normaal.
Naast voldoende en goed gevormde interpretaties over de origine en betekenis van symptomen,
hebben mensen ook nog eigen beliefs of simpele heuristics om de informatie van het lichaam te
interpreteren. Een voorbeeld van een belief dat kan leiden tot een interpretatie kan zijn: ‘When a
body tissue is red, it indicates an infection’. Een heuristiek kan zijn ‘When body information manifests
after stress, it is caused by stress’.
We gaan kijken naar verschillende manieren in het ontvangen van informatie van het lichaam:
Mensen zien zichzelf en ze kijken naar de buitenkant van hun lichaam.
Mensen kunnen hun ogen bekijken; ze kunnen rood, geel of waterig zijn.
Mensen kunnen kijken naar hun huid en zien wat er mogelijk niet goed
is; bijvoorbeeld eczeem. Ook kunnen mensen kijken naar hun nagels of
naar de vorm van hun lichaam.
