Hi! My name is Meghan Young and I study OT at UCT. I made these notes by transcribing lecture videos during our HUB lectures last year which were online. I also made anatomy notes in the same format. These notes include a lot of extra information that is not included in the slides, and they helped ...

NERVE PHYSIOLOGY:
OVERVIEW

NERVOUS SYSTEM:
- The nervous system is essentially a system with wires (nerves) and a hard drive (brain) that makes every organ in our body function

Tasks:
Functions of the NS:
1. Collection of information
- Sensory function: to sense changes in the internal and external environment
Sensory afferent input
through sensory receptors.
2. Integrative function
CNS integrates and compares: • Sensory (afferent) neurons serve this function.
- Homeostatic ranges - Integrative function: to analyze the sensory information, store some aspects,
- Previous or learned experiences and make decisions regarding appropriate behaviors.
3. Elicits responses • Association or interneurons serve this function.
Motor efferent output - Motor function is to respond to stimuli by initiating action.
- Motor(efferent) neurons serve this function.
TWO MAJOR ANATOMICAL SUB-DIVISIONS: -

Central nervous system (CNS) Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
- Consists of brain and spinal cord - Cranial nerves
- Protected by surrounding bone • Arising from the brain
- Brain and spinal column are • 12 pairs of nerves
continuous with each other - Spinal nerves
• Arising from the spinal cord
• 31 pairs of nerves

Breakdown of the nervous system:

2 PRINCIPAL CELL TYPES:

Neurons Supporting cells
- Basic structural and functional units - Aid the function of neurons
of nervous system. - 5 x more abundant than neurons
- Specialised to respond to physical - Collectively called neuroglia
and chemical stimuli, conduct - Or simply glial cells
electrochemical impulses and - From Middle Greek glia= glue
release chemical regulators
- Through these mechanisms,
neurons are able to have sensory
perception, learning, memory and
the controls of muscles and glands
