Abstract

The uniform circular motion is the motion of an object when in a circle moving at constant
speed. When an object is moving in a circle it constantly change its direction but if it is
undergoing uniform circular motion it moves in a constant speed. In this laboratory the uniform
circular motion is being studied and through the lab Newton’s second law for centripetal and
centripetal force can be verified. Studying the Newton’s second law, a plastic ball will be
attached to a spring and a cord is rotated in uniform circular motion and since the spring constant
and displacement of the spring can easily be determined, the centripetal force can be calculated.
With spring constant, displacement of the spring and the centripetal force known, also the
tension in the cord can be determined. From, the experiment there raised several verification that
tangential acceleration guides the velocity of the object in circular motion while the radial
components guides the change on direction and this enables that an object moves in a circular
motion. This balance between the tangential components of acceleration and radial components
of acceleration results in a tension to the cord plus the spring on which the object is moving in a
circle. The resulted centripetal acceleration was 67.6 m/s2, the tangential velocity was 7.35 m/s
and centripetal force was 0.676 N. The tension force was 0.676 N if the body was moving fast
enough and if it was moving slowly then factoring the force due to gravity it was 0.683 N.
