DEVELOPMENT
@Tshembho Xivambu

Interaction Design
It’s all about understanding the dynamics of how we interact with computing
devices.

USER CENTERED DESIGN
An approach that focuses on the needs, preference and the behaviour of the end
user when developing products or services

THE GOAL OF IT IS:
To create solutions that are easy to learn.

Enjoyable

Efficient

WHY DO PEOPLE CHOOSE ONE SERVICE OVER ANOTHER?
There are plenty reasons why users choose another service over another:

1. User satisfaction

2. Ease to use.

3. Efficiently functionality

4. Personalization

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KFI)
Matrics used to assess the performance of a product.

These indicators include:

1. RETANTION

The percentage of the users that continue to use the product overtime.

and the sharing of the particular product to certain people in order for them to join
you in using the product.

DESIGN THINKING
It’s a problem-solving approach that emphasizes on understanding the user’s needs
and coming up with innovative solutions for those needs.

It typically consists of three stages:

The Three Stages of Design Thinking
1. Understand

Designers seek to emphasize on the user’s needs and then they define the problem
they are trying to solve.

MOBILE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT 2

, 2. Explore

This stage includes Brainstorming the ideas and communicating with the team you
are working on the problem with.

3. Materialize

In this stage, all the selected ideas are turned into a tangible prototype, and they’re
tested if they’re valid.

SPECTRUM OF DESIGN
What is HCI?
The term HCI stands for Human Computer Interaction

It simply means the study of how humans interact with certain computers.

NB: We have different types of HCI.

MOBILE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT 3

, Why is HCI important?
Overall, HCI focuses on creating solutions that is not only functional, but it is also
user-friendly, efficient and accessible.

This leads to a better user experience.

1. Efficiency and productivity.

2. User Centred Design

3. Enhanced User Experience

4. Reduced Errors and Mistakes

5. Cost savings

Different Mindsets
There are two different mindsets that are discussed in CSC2002S.

Those mindsets are the Expert mindset and the Participatory mindset.

The Expert Mindset
“Users” are often seen as subjects, with experts analysing and making decisions on
their behalf.

It may lack user’s input (The user not getting to say what type of product they would
want; they just have to stick to what the experts choose for them).

The Participatory Mindset
“Users” are considered as partners in this design process, their inputs and
collaboration are actively attempted to be found to create a more user-centrelic
solution.
