Unit 7 – European Travel Market
P2 – Select holidays in European destinations to meet specific motivations
In this assignment I will be selecting European destinations to meet specific
motivations; I will be looking at the following scenario – A couple who are celebrating
their silver wedding anniversary in June and would like to visit cultural
destinations in Italy or Spain, that offers opportunities to visit art galleries and
experience local cuisine. They would like to go to a 5* hotel on bed and breakfast
and which has a swimming pool or a spa. They would like to travel from a London
Airport. They don’t mind travelling from a low cost airline but want reasonable
flight times. They would like to travel for 5 nights.
A holiday to Spain
The couple want to visit a cultural destination; therefore I have chosen the cultural city
Barcelona. Barcelona is well known for their art galleries. Barcelona is located at the
Mediterranean Sea in the very north of the Spanish coast. They want their holiday type
to be a short break as they only want to go for 5 nights.
I have chosen the tour operator Thomas Cook as it will save the couple a bit of money
booking it as a package holiday. The Claris Hotel is a 5* and it is bed and breakfast. The
Claris Hotel is located in a prime position in the central district of Eixample near
Sagrada Familia which is close to all major attractions. The description of the hotel says
that it is perfect for couples. It is 17km from Barcelona Airport. The hotel has a wide
range of facilities including a hot buffet breakfast served every morning. A tapas bar
with a wide range of cocktails and tapas. They also have an open top restaurant, perfect
for a romantic evening and to enjoy the views of Barcelona. The Claris have an outdoor
swimming pool and solarium followed by a gym and sauna. However there isn’t much of
a Spa.
They will be flying from London Gatwick. Outbound they will be flying at 14:20 which
gets them into Barcelona at 17:25 local time. Inbound they will be flying from Barcelona
airport at 11:05 and arrive in Gatwick at 12:25. These flight times are not really late at
,night, and not too early in the morning. The total cost is approximately £718pp.
including baggage for the both of them it is going to cost approximately £1,522.
When booking with Thomas Cook you can book special requests. I have stated that it is
the couple’s anniversary so they will receive something like champagne or chocolates.
Their motivation to go is because it is their silver wedding anniversary, visit art galleries
and try local cuisine. There are lots of romantic things to do in Barcelona. Firstly there
are romantic restaurants. A lovely restaurant called Restaurant La Dentelliére. It is
located in a charming spot in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. The place has been restored in
order to keep all its charm and decorated with reddish and gold shades that create a
really warm and romantic atmosphere. The couple can sample Spanish/Mediterranean
cuisine and can sample local wines. There are lots of paella dishes and tapas. The
average price is €30. Another very popular restaurant is the Alaire Terrace Bar. It is a
roof top restaurant which offers amazing views of Gaudi’s Casa Mila and the Sagrada
Familia, guests can admire the views of the city in dim mood lighting and enjoying
, occasional live music performances. It is a Mediterranean themed restaurant which
offers fine dinners, tapas, salads and sweet treats. The couple can sample cocktails and
wine. It is perfect for summer nights, and an ideal spot for couples.
There are also other romantic things to do. The couple could go to an outdoor cinema.
Sala Montujic is an open air film festival under the Barcelona sky. People can watch
classic movies and concerts whilst having a picnic. The film festival is on when the
couple are visiting.
Another romantic activity which the couple could take part in is salsa dancing. Antilla
Salsa Barcelona is the most famous salsa club in Barcelona, with the performances of a
lot of music bands and orchestras which mix Latin and fusion music: you can dance and
watch the band playing live music at the same time. It’s got an amazing atmosphere
divided in two different spaces (Sala 1 and Sala 2) which offer free dance lessons,
workshops, performances and Caribbean cocktails.
